‘The Vampire Diaries’: Was Caroline Not Finding Klaus A Spoiler For ‘The Originals’?

The Vampire Diaries introduced Joseph Morgan as Klaus Mikaelson in Season 2, Episode 17. He was only featured on TVD a handful of times, but Klaus was an interesting and memorable character. Later, Klaus would be featured with his siblings on the spin-off show, The Originals. Season 3 has been the most intense yet and there is concern about the Mikaelson prophecy. Last week on The Vampire Diaries, Caroline Forbes mentioned not finding Klaus when she traveled to New Orleans. Was this a spoiler for The Originals? Does the prophecy get fulfilled, did Klaus go into hiding, or is there something else going on?

Before anyone gets too worried, The CW network renewed The Originals. The news came back in March, according to Is My Show Cancelled. It was an early surprise for fans, especially since renewal and cancellation announcements usually happen in May. With the show being renewed, either the Mikaelson prophecy will not happen, or the storyline will continue in Season 4.

However, fans could not ignore Caroline’s statement in the last episode of The Vampire Diaries. As previously reported by The Inquisitr, Caroline was marked by Bonnie, the new vampire huntress, Caroline left to go on the run with Stefan. During an awkward and angry conversation with her ex-boyfriend, Caroline mentioned she couldn’t find Klaus anywhere when she traveled to New Orleans. So, was this a spoiler for The Originals?

“It’s definitely a hint,” executive producer Julie Plec told TV Line. “This year, as we’ve crossed over, we’ve acknowledged [The Vampire Diaries and The Originals’] shared universe. As we know from The Originals, there’s a prophecy predicting the demise of the Mikaelson family, so it was a nice little tease for viewers of that show to ask themselves, ‘Wait, what the hell happened to Klaus?'”

Even though The Originals is a spin-off from The Vampire Diaries, the two are separate TV shows. Occasionally, there will be a crossover, but fans shouldn’t worry about being left the in the dark. As TVD goes into Season 8 and The Originals into Season 4, the two shows will have “more connectivity.”

“It’s a rare luxury to have two shows in a shared universe that you could do that,” Plec said of TVD and The Originals connecting. “So to not do it feels like we’re missing a really fun creative opportunity, a way to celebrate both shows.”

However, the executive producer added that there is no rule that crossovers have to happen. But, Plec thinks it is fun to find small, organic ways to connect the shows and characters together.

“Like when we had Matt Donovan show up on The Originals — that wasn’t for ratings, it just made logical sense that if The Originals were in Mystic Falls, they’d have a run-in with Deputy Donovan,” Julie Plec explained. “I’d love to keep doing stuff like that. It’s fun, and it’s easier to accomplish than a massive two-show crossover.”

Now fans know that Caroline was giving a little tease about Klaus Mikaelson on The Vampire Diaries. So, what can be expected from Klaus and the other characters on the next episode of The Originals?

“After receiving new visions of the looming prophecy, Freya (Riley Voelkel) uncovers that her family is on a collision course with a dangerous new enemy,” Spoilers Guide wrote regarding Season 3, Episode 21. “Meanwhile, with the help of Detective Kinney (guest star Jason Dohring), Vincent (Yusuf Gatewood) and Kol (guest star Nathaniel Buzolic) travel to the ancestral world to put a stop to the witches and take back their city once and for all. Elsewhere, Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and Elijah (Daniel Gillies) confront Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) after a heartbreaking plan gone wrong has sent him spiraling.”
