The announcement that Command & Conquer Generals 2 had essentially been scrapped and transformed into a free-to-play project known only as Command & Conquer didn’t exactly go over well with the fanbase, and I don’t imagine this news will go over any easier.

Speaking with PC Gamer (via Joystiq), BioWare Victory General Manager John Van Caneghem confirmed the fans’ fears: Command & Conquer Generals 2, as it now exists, will not come with any kind of singleplayer. Instead, the studio is focusing on “cooperative” and “competitive” gameplay.

There is, at least, a little hope that Command & Conquer Generals 2 could, at some point after launch, get some sort of singleplayer update.

PC Gamer’s Tom Senior reports:

“Bioware Victory general manager John Van Caneghem told me last week that Generals 2 will ship without a single player mode. Instead, “co-operative and competitive” skirmishes will serve as the core, with more modes to be added later based on community feedback. A story mode could be added later, but “it is something we haven’t announced yet how we’re going to do it.”

“We decided to choose Generals as the first set of games we build under the universe, but we’ll be expanding after that, like Tiberium and Red Alert as well as some others as well. But Generals 2 was the first one, and it was one of the biggest sellers, as well as the fanbase has been asking for it for some time,” Van Caneghem said.

Does a lack of a singleplayer campaign for Command & Conquer Generals 2 matter to you, or are you more interested in what the multiplayer looks like?
