Four million Apple iPad minis will be produced by suppliers in September according to an unnamed source who spoke with tech publication DigiTimes.

The same source suggests that, in preparation for a massive product manufacturing cycle, some suppliers have already began small-scale production, building several hundred thousand iPad mini devices in June.

It is believed that the iPad mini will feature a 7.85-inch display with a thin bezel and a resolution similar to that of the iPad 2, which offers 1024×768 pixels of resolution. In comparison, the Google Nexus 7 features a 1280 x 800 pixels of resolution on a 7.0-inch display.

If rumors are correct, the Apple iPad mini will also feature Apple’s soon to be announced smaller dock connector, the same option that will reportedly be made available on the Apple iPhone 5. The display on the device is also believed to use an iridium tin oxide (ITO) coating.

If the source is correct, the iPad mini is as skinny as the Apple iPod touch and lighter than comparable tablets currently on the market.

Apple is expected to officially announce the iPad mini during its September 12 event in which the iPhone 5 will be announced. Apple as always has remained tight-lipped when it comes to disclosing even the smallest details of its new smaller tablet series.
