St. Louis Cardinals Lose To Pittsburgh Pirates, Prepare For Los Angeles Road Trip

As the Chicago Cubs continue to dominate Major League Baseball with a record of 24-6, the St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates struggle for the National League Central Division’s second place spot. After giving up two games in a three-game series to the Pirates at Busch Stadium, the Cardinals now prepare for a road trip to Los Angeles that includes series against the LA Dodgers and the LA Angeles.

As the Pirates (17-14) move on to a series with the struggling Cincinnati Reds (13-19), the Cubs (24-6) will hope to stay ahead of the NL Central curve as they host the San Diego Padres (13-19) at Wrigley Field. The Cardinals begin their road trip with a struggling LA team before moving on to the more dominant Los Angeles ball club.

The Cards-Bucs series set St. Louis back, so they will look for wins against the Dodgers and Angels to make up for it.

Cards vs. Pirates

Coming into the series against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Busch Stadium, the Cardinals were just one half game behind the Bucs. Although it’s very early in the season, both teams are so far behind the Chicago Cubs at this point that the focus has to be on remaining eligible for a Wild Card spot at the end of the regular season. After losing two and winning just one, the Cards are now 1.5 games behind the Pirates.

The next time St. Louis plays Pittsburgh will be June 10, when the Pirates host the Cardinals for another three-game series. The feud returns to St. Louis for a series in July, and the teams have two more series against each other at the beginning and end of September.

NL Central standings

Before sweeping the Washington Nationals, the Cubs swept division rivals Pittsburgh Pirates. But, as Chicago was dealing with Washington, Pittsburgh moved on to a series with another NL Central rival, the red birds of St. Louis. The Cards and Bucs split their series 2-1 (in favor of the Pirates), allowing the Cubs to put 7.5 games between themselves and the second place Pirates. The Cardinals are now 1.5 games behind the Pirates.

Only three games separates the third place Cardinals (16-16) and the last place Cincinnati Reds (13-19). The Milwaukee Brewers (16-18) have the Reds edged out by just a half game, riding fourth place in the National League’s Central Division.
