Why Won’t Harry Styles Take A Selfie?

Over the years, fans of One Direction have observed the many ways that Harry Styles refuses to follow trends. The left-leaning New Statesman praised Harry for dressing “outside the gender binary.”

“Finally, a mainstream risk-taker in men’s fashion…Enter Harry Styles: flared, floral and flawless.”

Harry is a trendsetter, not a trend follower.

Another good example is his Instagram, which is full of moody black and white shots, cryptic captions, and very few selfies.

“Hell will actually freeze over before he posts a selfie,” the ladies at Sugarscape lamented in their article about the struggles faced by Harry girls.

“Unless you’re attracted to empty egg boxes and raindrops trickling down a window pane, his Insta feed has nothing for you.”

When Harry revealed that he had cut his famous hair this week, he did it with a shot of his hand holding a snipped lock of hair!

Harry also tagged the cause he is supporting, Little Princess Trust, a charity that provides hairpieces and wigs to children undergoing cancer treatment.

Fans were moved by Harry’s kindness but also anxious to see the short-haired hunk in a full-face shot, with his blue-green eyes shining like Van Gogh whorls in a minimalist new frame.

Harry Styles fans begged the heartthrob to oblige them. The question of why Harry never, ever posts selfies exploded on Twitter again.

People even begged Harry’s more selfie-happy bandmates to teach Styles to take a selfie.

Why won’t Harry Styles take a selfie?

One person reflected that it may be because sensitive Harry does not want to appear egotistical.

There may be something to this. Harry is known to be very lifestyle conscious and to indulge in all kinds of meditation, Pilates sessions, Soul Cycle, spiritual searching, and dietary self-denial.

Harry’s sister Gemma has written about the Styles family’s horror when a fan asked Harry for a selfie at his grandmother’s funeral.

Perhaps the fit hunk agrees with the idea that selfie-taking is a pox on the modern world. Many writers have argued that the selfie trend has made people narcissistic and that it encourages us to focus on ourselves rather than considering the events and objects around us or reflecting on our own lives.

Harry is known to be friends with philosopher Alain de Botton, who has written that the internet and digital technology are preventing people from engaging with their surroundings.

Alain suggests taking a “Digital Sabbath” (cutting out social media for a whole week or month) and has sung the praises of drawing as a way for humans to recover our powers of observation in an age when images are abundant, cheap, and quick to create.

Artistic Harry Styles is known to be a keen hobbyist painter — it would not be a surprise if the fit superstar was trying to keep his senses sharp, rather than dulling them through excessive internet use and selfie-taking.

To refine his drawing and painting skills, Harry will need to peer at the world with fresh, sharp eyes free of fatigue.

By abstaining from excessive web browsing, selfie-taking, and other such commonplace activities, Harry will be able to train his mind to see the world in a way that most people do not. This will inject soul and a genuinely fresh perspective into Harry’s artistic work.

Fans remain eager to see Harry’s beloved heart-shaped face unframed by raggedy curl-curtains, and many wait with bated breath for the first pictures (no doubt taken by somebody else) to emerge in the next few days. Perhaps Rande Gerber or Cindy Crawford will make fans’ day by snapping a quick shot of the sexy guy as he downs forkfuls of kale at Cafe Habana.
