Serena Williams Cameos On ‘Lemonade,’ Talks About Twerking On Beyonce ‘Sorry’ Video

Serena Williams’ courage and strength are what led to a dance cameo on “Sorry,” one of the songs on Beyonce’s Lemonade visual album. It is well-known that Williams is a magnificent tennis player, but what many may not know is that she enjoys dancing.

The director of the video and Serena have known each other since the tennis star was a 9-year-old. She also said she knows Beyonce “pretty well” and was approached by the two to make an appearance, noted the New York Daily News.

“We would love for you to be in this particular song. It’s about strength and it’s about courage and that’s what we see you as.”

The “Sorry” video features Beyonce singing about a man and his cheating ways. Serena had a simple assignment: Dance like you would if nobody was watching and be free, added the New York Daily News. Well, Serena let loose and twerked on the video.

“She told me that she just wants me to dance, like just be really free and just dance like nobody’s looking and go all out. So that wasn’t easy in the beginning, but then it got easier…. I thought that particular song on the visual album was really a strong song, and it was also really fun at the same time.”

The world famous tennis star wasn’t the only one to appear in “Sorry.” Other big names are Amandla Stenberg, Quvenzhane Wallis, and Zendaya. The entire Lemonade album is now available on Jay-Z’s Tidal.

When Serena was asked how she enjoyed the experience, she revealed a bit more about herself to fans, per Essence.

“Well, um, it was fun. It was a great experience. I love to dance (little known fact) but, I actually really love dancing. It just makes me really relaxed and it’s also a good way to work out without like, being on the treadmill. But yeah, it was great. I love her and she’s a great person. Her visual album was an amazing thing and I just felt really honored just to be a part of it.”

Some fans thought a twerking Serena was fabulous.

Not everyone thought that the greatest female tennis star in the world should be twerking in a Beyonce video, and some voiced their disapproval on Twitter.

The “Sorry” video isn’t the first time Serena has twerked. She has even made a video tutorial showing others how to do the popular dance.

One of the biggest critics of the “Sorry” video and Serena’s performance is rapper, Khia who said Beyonce’s video was “tired.” Khia also said Williams’ performance was like a court jester and portrayed black people in a bad light, according to VH1.com.

“And here you is, black as a black juicy berry and you getting in front of this h** and let her have her legs open in the chair while you twerking for her like the slave masters had us do. B**ch, did you channel that, too?”

Serena Williams is an adult who can make her own choices, but many believe that twerking in a Beyonce video is beneath someone of Williams’ incredible skill and stature as an athlete.
