‘The Mindy Project’ Season 4 Spoilers: Chris Messina On Mindy And Danny’s Relationship, Returning To Season 5

Hulu has just renewed The Mindy Project for Season 5 to the delight of fans. While some were worried that Mindy (Mindy Kaling) and Danny’s (Chris Messina) relationship is done for good, the stars revealed that viewers are in for an exciting surprise in the coming Season 4 finale.

In an interview with Glamour, Ike Barinholtz, who plays Morgan Tookers on the hit Hulu series, shared that Chris Messina landing a role on Ben Affleck’s Live By Night had been a blessing in disguise for The Mindy Project Season 4. The writer explained that this was the perfect opportunity to bring the focus back to Mindy.

“The show became about Mindy and Danny, and I think we were finding great ways to tell those stories, but just like life, sometimes it doesn’t work out that way. Now we have a show about a single mother, who’s looking for love in New York, and I think it’s been pretty fun [working with that],” he explained.

Mindy Kaling also admitted that it was fun seeing her alter-ego experience what it was like being a single mother in New York, juggling her professional and personal life. She also felt proud that the stories of single mothers were now represented on TV.

In the last episode of The Mindy Project Season 4, fans clearly saw a sexual tension between Mindy and Jody (Garret Dillahunt). Unfortunately, Jody ended up bailing on Mindy after Danny told him to stay away.

“Of all the women in this town you get to date the ex of a friend? Whatever’s going on between you and Mindy, it’s over right now,” Danny said.

“But you’ve been broken up for a few months what if Mindy decided she wants to date me?” Jody asked.

“I don’t care what Mindy wants anymore, this is about what I want. Think about it. If it didn’t work out with me, do you think it’s really going to work out with you?” Danny countered.

The episode ended with Mindy hooking up with a bartender, played by guest star Kyle Bornheimer.

The “Mindy Lahiri is DTF” episode definitely gave fans hope that Mindy and Danny could eventually get back together, especially after that touching, yet awkward, elevator scene.

Speaking to Glamour, Chris Messina shared that we have not seen the last of Danny Castellano just yet. He shared there are some “really funny” and “moving” episodes ahead. While he appreciated that The Mindy Project writers were not afraid to shake things up a bit, if it were to him, Messina wanted Mindy and Danny to end up together in the end.

“Look, these two are crazy about each other. It would be nice to have them both, especially Danny, wake up and realize that love like that doesn’t always come around.”

Messina also hinted that in classic The Mindy Project fashion, there would be twists and turns in the Season 4 finale. He teased that the episode is going to be tense, funny, and wild.

For those who are still worried about Mindy and Danny’s fate on the show, TV Line reported that Chris Messina’s name was included in Hulu’s renewal release alongside fellow series regulars, which could only mean that we will get to see more of him on The Mindy Project Season 5.

Ike Barinholtz, however, hinted that Mindy and Danny are not the only ones who might end up getting back together in the Season 4 finale. The Mindy Project actor/writer shared that there is still hope for Morgan and Tamra (Xosha Roquemore).

“I think Morgan would take her back, but I think she’s past him. I think they’ll [eventually] end up together.”
