‘The Division’ 1.2 Update Will Be More Generous With Loot

Ubisoft Massive continues to see the perfect balance for providing loot in The Division. The developer talked the upcoming 1.2 update in a State of the Game livestream Wednesday, where it announced weapons, gears, and items will drop more generously in the future for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC shooter.

The 1.2 update for The Division is currently going through the testing phase to ensure it is “rock solid” on release. There isn’t an exact date yet, but it will include a number of bug fixes, including the Reckless chest talent and the “One is None” talent.

While the bug fixes will be plentiful and Ubisoft is now coming down harder on cheating and exploits, the developer also acknowledges the loot changes in the 1.1 update did not go far enough. The 1.2 update will improve the quantity and quality of drops across activities.

“There was the famous crafting nerf. That was to move the crafting away from the best source of the best items in the game and putting it in a more sporting activity,” Project Coordinator Quentin Correggi explained. “It’s not there yet. We increased the drop of high-end material… we increased the quantity, but not the quality of it.

He continued, “The whole idea behind the 1.2 patch and what we are going to do with the loot, the motto for the team and for that update is to be generous.”

Players with a Gear score of 200 and above will get their own Dark Zone bracket with the 1.2 update. This is to keep the balance between players and also an opportunity to provide a tougher challenge and much better loot, the best quality you can get. This includes 240 Gear Sets and 204 items along with High-End Division Tech. There will be no more blue or green Division Tech loot in the highest bracket.

Ubisoft is also changing the frequency that certain items will drop across all Dark Zone brackets. Mods will drop less while weapons will drop more. In fact, the developer says you will see much more weapons since you cannot recalibrate those high-end items. The idea is for players to roll stats and perks for a weapon while having fun killing a boss versus sitting at a crafting station to re-roll.

The same kind of loot buffs will be applied throughout all of the high-end activities for The Division, and not just the Dark Zone. Incursions will get more and better loot along with Challenge Modes. It’s unknown if the quantity will be the same as when a bug in the 1.1 patch left bosses dropping High-End items in the Challenge mode, but it will be more.

PVE activities, in general, will be much more rewarding, per Ubisoft. The removal of the “Bullet King” and other named enemies outside of the Dark Zone will make more sense with this update, according to the developer.

Weapon balance was also addressed with a promise of no drastic nerfs. Ubisoft will instead rely on buffing low-performing items in The Division versus nerfing over-powered items. There will be a few nerfs, but these will be slight tweaks.

Again, there is no release window for The Division 1.2 update. It will need to go through testing and then certification with PlayStation and Xbox before it arrives on console and PC. The question is will it go far enough to satisfy complaints from the game’s community over loot drops.

This isn’t the only open-world multiplayer shooter to go through these loot issues. Destiny has struggled with providing loot drops and upgrade paths since it launched in September 2014. Only the recent 2.2 update appears to have solved the problem of giving players an acceptable frequency of loot drops while participating in different in-game activities.
