‘Outlander’ Star Caitriona Balfe Reveals What Is Holding Her Back From Falling In Love With Sam Heughan

While Outlander continues its second season, many fans are still puzzled why Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan have not fallen for each other in real life. After all, it only seems fitting that their on-screen chemistry would continue when the cameras stop rolling. Fortunately, Balfe recently cleared up the issue and revealed the true reason why she and Heughan have not started dating.

According to People, Balfe sat down for an interview with Taylor Strecker on Wake Up with Taylor. Balfe discussed her time on Outlander and finally explained why a real-life relationship with Heughan is not likely to happen anytime soon.

“Well, I mean, for me I think it’s quite easy not to develop feelings like that because it’s acting, right?” Balfe told Strecker. “You know, I feel very lucky, Sam and I have an amazing bond, we’re really great friends — but, you know, it’s acting.”

Fans have naturally interpreted Balfe and Heughan’s strong bond on the show as a clear indication that they should get together. However, despite Claire’s heated romance with Jamie, Balfe explained how the scenes fans watch on television are not an intimate process for the actors.

“You’re usually doing those scenes in front of about 20 people, mostly burly, sweaty men whose jeans are like halfway down their bum crack,” Balfe hilariously shared. “So it’s quite easy not to get carried away! We call it plumber’s butt in Ireland.”

This is not the first time Balfe has addressed rumors of a romance with Heughan. According to Movie News Guide, the Outlander stars have shot down reports of a blooming romance in the past. In fact, Heughan recently echoed Balfe’s sentiments and shared how it is hard to let fans down.

“It saddens me a bit, but I guess that means we’ve done a good job,” he stated.

The desire of fans to see their favorite characters hook-up in real life is nothing new, especially in the world of Outlander. In fact, Claire’s romance with Jamie has been a major focal point throughout the series and is one reason why the series has been so successful. For the most part, fans have reacted well to their intimate scenes, including back in Season 1 when Heughan went shirtless.

“[There] was something about whenever Sam took his top off that there were [tweets about] women getting ‘a kick in their ovaries,’ or something like that,” Balfe stated. “That was kind of weird, the whole ‘kick in the ovaries’ thing was bizarre. I don’t quite know what that meant! I think it was like reawakening their ovaries or something?”

Sadly, Balfe’s comments indicate that the two will never get together outside of Outlander. However, at least fans can continue to watch their relationship on-screen develop during Outlander’s second season. Although Jamie and Claire have encountered a few roadblocks in their relationship — mostly because of Jamie’s traumatic experiences last season — things heated back up in the last episode.

Despite discovering that Jamie’s biggest enemy, Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies), is still alive, Claire and Jamie finally got intimate again. Although Jamie could have reacted negatively to the shocking news, the fact that Black Jack is still alive has allowed him to deal with his past demons.

“It’s like finally he’s been released from Randall’s nightmare,” Heughan explained in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter. “His cure comes from a very strange place, from Randall himself.”

Of course, Jamie and Claire still have plenty of challenges ahead, all of which will put their relationship to the ultimate test.

Fans can watch Heughan and Balfe in action when the second of season of Outlander continues Saturday nights on Starz.
