Free ‘Minecraft’ Super Mario DLC Coming To Wii U, Xbox Edition Turns Four

Monday produced a double dose of good news for Minecraft console edition fans. The Xbox Edition of the open-world sandbox title officially turned four today. Meanwhile, the Wii U Edition will receive a much anticipated Mash-up Pack featuring Super Mario and the rest of the gang.

Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition was released to the console four years ago today. Microsoft, Mojang, and 4J Studios are giving away a 4th Birthday Skin Pack for free via the Xbox Store for both the Xbox One and Xbox 360 to celebrate. The limited time skin pack provides a selection of Minecraft-themed t-shirts for your character to wear including a Creeper, Chicken, Enderman, Cat, Dog, Sheep, and more.

If you missed any of the three previous Birthday Skins Packs, those are also available for download on the Xbox Store right now. Yes, they are all completely free, as well, and will be available for a limited time.

Meanwhile, it’s block world meets block world for Minecraft Wii U Edition. The Super Mario Mash-Up Pack is coming as a free update to the game on May 17. Like all Mash-Up Packs, the update will completely re-skin both the game and user interface using Super Mario textures and items. The in-game music will also offer the option to switch to music from Nintendo’s mascot series and it will include a pre-made world and a large collection of new skins.

The content for the Minecraft Wii U Edition Super Mario Mash-Up Pack is inspired by other games from the series. If you can’t guess which ones from the screenshots, Super Mario 64, Super Mario World, Super Mario Sunshine are among those officially listed by Nintendo in its press release.

“The Wii U version of Minecraft features the full game, as well as many of the most popular previously released content packs for no extra charge. Downloading the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack gives players 40 new Super Mario-themed skins, which transform the game’s characters into familiar heroes like Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach, and even troublemakers like Bowser, Wario and all seven Koopalings. All the world and item textures in the game will also be redone, providing players the opportunity to create their own Super Mario-themed locations within the world of Minecraft. While building, players will even enjoy listening to the smooth sounds of 15 pieces of music from Super Mario 64. Builders of all ages will love crafting massive new worlds using building blocks inspired by a series as accessible and recognizable as Super Mario.”

“Both the Super Mario franchise and Minecraft embrace the magic of exploration and discovery,” said Steve Singer, Nintendo of America’s Vice President of Publisher & Developer Relations. “Players will have a great time adventuring and creating in this free game update that embraces the unique and memorable elements of both franchises.”

Minecraft: Wii U Edition will also be receiving a retail version to purchase in stores on June 17. The game will be sold for $29.99 and will include the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack on the disk.

Nintendo was finally able to put Minecraft on the Wii U in December 2015. The game quickly rocketed up the sales charts on the console just as it has done on the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.

The Microsoft purchase of Mojang and Minecraft continues to produce interesting events, however, despite worries the company would make the title exclusive to the Xbox and Windows PCs. Obviously, the PlayStation editions of the game are still well-supported, but now Wii U owners are receiving free DLC.
