‘Marvel’s Agents Of SHIELD’ Recap — Hive Wants to Prevent ‘Civil War’ From Happening

With Captain America: Civil War just days away and the season finale of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. only two weeks away, ABC’s connection to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is really building to a “civil war” like end to its third season. For two more weeks, the Marvel Comics-based televised team of good guys will be trying to save humanity from an inhumane, “Inhuman” future on Earth. And they’re up against a growing army led by two Inhumans who previously trained as SHIELD operatives.

As Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ended last week, Hive had just brought Daisy and all of Team Hive to an entire town in Wyoming that he now owns thanks to the Malicks’ wealth. While May and Coulson believe that the head of Hydra has fallen, they still have to destroy Hive and — hopefully — save Daisy along the way.

This week, Mack tries to be a super partner by rescuing Daisy from Hive’s spell, Fitz and Simmons deal with their first work-based argument since consummating their personal relationship, all while Daisy and Lincoln both risk everything to help save the ones they love.

The following contains spoilers for the episode of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (Season 3, Episode 19, “Failed Experiments”) that first aired May 3 on ABC.

Hive

SHIELD’s opposition has a very strong base. Backing Hive and Daisy are two dangerous Inhumans and an evil scientist. Hellfire (with Gambit-like powers to turn inanimate objects into explosives) and Alisha Whitley (with the power to duplicate herself) are brought on as warriors, while Holden Radcliffe is brought along to help recreate the experiments done by the Kree to turn an ancient tribal huntsman into Hive.

Hive’s plan is to save humanity by finding a way to turn them into Inhumans. Radcliffe’s experiments on the remaining Hydra members reveals that blood from a living Kree must be used or the human guinea pigs die. Hive creates a signal to alert the Kree that he still exists on Earth, and two of their powerful hunters return to wipe away what they now consider a failed experiment. After Daisy and Hive manage to kill the two Kree hunters, they are still left without the blood they needed.

At this point, fully convinced that Hive’s plan truly will save humanity, Daisy offers to be drained of her own blood. Because Coulson used Kree blood to save her previously, the necessary DNA still courses through her veins.

S.H.I.E.L.D. vs. Hydra

The real drama of the week is the fact that SHIELD’s mission is to kill Hive — even if that means Daisy is an unfortunate casualty. Mack refuses to accept this, and almost dies trying to convince Daisy that she’s making a mistake. While trying to shut down their plan completely, Mack manages to at least cause a delay when he destroys the dead Kree body that Hive and Radcliffe want to use for their experiments.

Lincoln, who was Daisy’s “partner” in another sense, also puts himself at risk by testing a potential cure for Hive’s brain infection. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work. The moral dilemma that Lincoln brings up by wanting to subject himself to the risks causes a work-place argument for Fitz and Simmons (now “Fitzsimmons” as a couple), who have to do their best to keep it from affecting their romantic relationship.

Neither team ultimately wins — at least this week. While SHIELD was able to (at least temporarily) stop Hive from completing his experiment, Daisy has agreed to make the ultimate sacrifice to continue Hive’s work.

Exclusive look at Captain America: Civil War

Of course, the Captain America: Civil War promotion throughout the show was very obvious. Explaining his entire past to Daisy, Hive tells the story of how his connection with other Inhumans caused paranoia which lead to “civil war” among the humans.

“Not much has changed,” Daisy replies, as a nod to this weekend’s Marvel release. Moments later, Hive’s speech makes an even more obvious allusion to the film:

“The world fears our kind of power, because not everyone has it. Only billionaires can build iron suits. Only the military can make super soldiers — which can only lead to a war of it’s own.”

Predictably, the first experiment doesn’t work, leading to Hive bringing the Kree warriors back.

Before the show ends, they offer an “exclusive look” at Captain America: Civil War with a previously-unreleased “sneak peek.” The clip shows both Hawkeye and Black Widow chasing some unnamed men, trying to get their hands on an unnamed object. Scouring the internet for a copy of the footage proved futile.

Next week

As the trailer for next week’s episode (“Emancipation”) indicates, the end of SHIELD’s own civil war is just two episodes away. Season 3, Episode 20 will be the first post-Captain America: Civil War episode of Marvel’sAgents, and there’s bound to be some more MCU references next week.
