‘Fear The Walking Dead’ Season 2, Episode 5: Who Will Live, Who Will Die?

In Episode 4 of Season 2 of AMC’s Fear The Walking Dead, the group encountered their first real threat from humans. Will this be the making–and breaking–point for some of these characters?

SPOILER ALERT: This article contains information on Season 2 of AMC’s Fear The Walking Dead. Please proceed with caution if you wish to avoid potential spoilers.

At first, there were only eight on Victor Strand’s (Colman Domingo) boat, the Abigail. The group discussed whether or not to take on other stranded seafaring voyagers they passed occasionally while out at sea. Most of the time, Strand just said no. However, in Episode 3 (entitled “Ouroboros”) of Fear The Walking Dead, Strand had his hand forced when Daniel Salazar (Ruben Blades) brought two people from Flight 462 with him. While it seemed Strand would have to suck it up and let Alex (Michelle Ang) and the badly burned Jake (Brendan Meyer) float along behind the Abigail, Strand fought back and eventually cut the pair free.

He could not, however, stop Alicia from giving away vital information via the boat’s radio to an unknown man called Jack (played by Daniel Zovatto). As a result of this, the group found themselves taken hostage by Jack’s group led by someone called Connor (Mark Kelly). Connor had not arrived but was on his way to cause even more havoc than Jack and the other two people already on board the Abigail.

By the end of Episode 4 of Fear The Walking Dead, the original group was split as Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) and Travis (Cliff Curtis) were taken off the Abigail. Episode 5, according to the official synopsis deals with how the group copes with the fallout from the hostile takeover of the Abigail in Episode 4.

“Alicia works to reunite with her family. Travis meets a familiar face. Madison and Nick lead a charge to save their family against all odds.”

And this might be just the thing the show needs to get the group banding together, in a united front. Because, if there is anything fans have learned from Fear’s companion program, The Walking Dead, is that you have a better chance of survival in a group.

Afer all, many fans are complaining about how naive many of the characters now they are faced with the zombie apocalypse. In order for this group to survive, and for the audience to connect with them, the conflict created by Alicia’s rookie error may be just the thing needed to move this show along. Now fans can watch as the group struggles not just with their morals, but pirates as well.

But who is likely to cope with this new world the best?

At the end of Season 1, Travis could have been placed at the top of the leaderboard for people who will cope well. However, since Season 2 has aired, he has regressed back to the old Travis, the one who cares just a little too much, who struggles once more with his now outdated morals. Considering he has been taken by Connor’s group, it might even be time to call him a lost cause. However, he is a jack of all trades, and that is handy during the zombie apocalypse. It is probably a skill Connor will be impressed with as well.

Alicia is the other one taken by Connor’s group. It is also her fault they were found by this new threat. If Alicia doesn’t smarten up soon, she could very well be the first major death for Season 2. For many fans, they are okay with that. Which is a shame because Alycia Debnam-Carey gave up another really popular TV series to work on Fear The Walking Dead. Another character fans seem okay with losing is Alicia’s step brother, Chris (Lorenzo James Henrie). He is another teen who needs to smarten up very quickly in order to earn his place as a survivor in the zombie apocalypse.

The characters most likely to come out of Episode 5 of Fear The Walking Dead unscathed–both physically and mentally–are Nick (Frank Dillane), Daniel Salazar, Victor Strand (even though he appeared to be injured in Episode 4) and Strand’s associate who has just joined them on board the Abigail, Luis (Arturo del Puerto). All of these characters had their street smarts on before the apocalypse hit. They will fight when needed to survive and seem to suffer little from the moral drop out afterwards. Daniel’s daughter, Ofelia (Mercedes Mason) is also likely going to be okay merely because she is on board the Abigail and not seen to be part of the group headed out to rescue Travis and Alicia.

Kim Dickens stars as Madison Clarke in AMCs Fear The Walking Dead Season 2 Episode 5 entitled Captive

Of concern, though, is Madison (Kim Dickens). She can be, at times, one tough nut. Other times, though, she is inclined to feel a little too much for her fellow humans. And this could very easily get her killed in Episode 5 of Fear The Walking Dead if she is not careful.
