Jon Snow: How It Happened, How Twitter Went Nuts, How Kit Harington Apologized: Major Spoiler

Jon Snow sure seemed dead as a doornail in the premiere of Game of Thrones Season 6.

However, the results of Episode 2 may not come as a big surprise to anyone, because the entire world has been anticipating the resurrection of Ned Stark’s bastard son, Jon Snow.

Sure enough at the end of Sunday’s episode, he is resurrected by the formerly-hated-but-now-maybe-liked-better-because-she-saved-him red witch, Melisandre (Carice van Houten).

Melisandre evoked a little bit of sympathy during the season premiere when she revealed an extremely vulnerable side of herself never seen before.

The Number Two episode, called Home, involves Davos Seaworth (Liam Cunningham) convincing Melisandre to use magic to resurrect Jon Snow. This particular scenario had been played out by fans many times, as it had been revealed that she had the power. Davos asked her for help.

“Do you know of any magic that could help bring him back? I’m not asking the Lord of Light for help. I’m asking the woman who showed me that miracles exist.”

An article in Variety goes over what executive producer D.B. Weiss explained in HBO’s post-show.

“Davos has no love lost for Melisandre. But he’s seen what she’s capable of. He’s seen her do many impossible things. He’s not a big fan of her god. He’s not a big fan of her program. There’s certainly nothing to lose at this point. If it doesn’t work, then it doesn’t work.”

Executive producer David Benioff chimed in.

“For Melisandre, she comes into it with great doubts. She is someone who was a true believer, who was an absolute devotee of the Lord of Light, and the events of the last many episodes have shaken that faith. But she still believes in him. She just doesn’t know if he believes in her. And so she comes to Jon Snow’s body with the tiniest hope that maybe if she says the right words, if she says them with enough belief, with enough passion, the Lord will listen to her.”

Beinoff adds that it is Ghost, of course, who first knows the truth.

“Ghost, he’s known Jon longer than any of these people have. All of these wolves have a strange and deep connection with their Stark counterparts. Ghost has a sixth sense when it comes to Jon Snow and when Jon’s in danger and when he might be coming back.”

So Melisandre bathes Jon Snow, and in a Samson-and-Delilah type manner, she cuts his hair. Except this time it works in the opposite way.

“And from his lips she drew the hallelujah.”

Or something like that.

Sunday’s story ends with Jon Snow’s startled eyes popping open and his chest heaving, suddenly gasping for air. He did it with style, too, somewhat Christlike, pure and clean, complete with stab wounds, admirable six-pack notwithstanding.

To date, the only witness is his direwolf, Ghost.

Actor Kit Harington apologized to Game of Thrones fans via Entertainment Weekly.

“Sorry! I’d like to say sorry for lying to everyone. I’m glad that people were upset that he died. I think my biggest fear was that people were not going to care. Or it would just be, ‘Fine, Jon Snow’s dead.’ But it seems like people had a, similar to the Red Wedding episode, kind of grief about it. Which means something I’m doing — or the show is doing — is right.”

Right, indeed! Here’s what fans had to say about it:

My heart is pounding & im so happy & I can’t… I’m sorry if I ruin GoT for anyone. But JON SNOW IS ALIVE & I’ve been brought to life.????????????
