Sony had promised a Google Android 4.0 update for its Xperia P smartphones in Spring 2012, that update has finally arrived and just in time for fall.

Unlike some over-the-air updates the Sony process is more involved, requiring users to download PC Companion software for Windows PCs or Bridge for Mac. The phone must than be synced with the users computer before it can download the Android 4.0 update.

Aside from receiving a set of standard Google Android 4.0 updates the Xperia P will also receive some Sony specific enhancements. Among improved options are Walkman, Album and Movies. The Walkman feature replaces the standard Android music player with Sony’s longtime staple while the Album feature sorts and displays photos. Movies might be one of the coolest feature, allowing users to host movies and pair them with specific information about cast members and summary information.

Sony has also added a new standby mode that turns off functions note being used, thus extending battery life. Sony claims the new standby mode can increase battery life by upwards of fourfold.

Also includes are an improved lockscreen and resizable widget.

Sony will fully unveil the new updates over the next several weeks via worldwide providers. Sony is also promising the Android 4.0 update for Xperia U, Xperia go and Xperia sola smartphones. Sony has not given a time frame for the additional device updates.
