Britney Spears Is Not Pulling A ‘Madonna’ By Adopting Baby From Malawi

Britney Spears is adopting a baby from Malawi, just like Madonna did in 2009 with Mercy and in 2006 with David. This is what Yahoo, usually a very accurate news source, has reported.

“As well as being the Queen of Pop, the 34-year-old is also mum to two sons, ten-year-old Sean and nine-year-old Jayden, but reports say that she is now considering adopting a little girl from Malawi as she reaches a more settled point in her life.”

Yahoo seems to have picked up the story from the latest print edition of the Enquirer, who uses “mysterious sources” to try and — once again — fool people. It is believed that Britney wants a daughter. The only (and major) problem with this story is that, according to Gossip Cop, it’s completely false.

“Britney Spears is NOT considering adopting a daughter from the African country, Malawi, despite a bogus report. Gossip Cop can exclusively correct this story. We’re told it’s not true,” says gossip buster Andrew Shuster. Gossip Cop also notes that Life & Style falsely claimed that Britney is going to adopt a baby from China.

One wonders if Britney Spears would want to put herself through the same ringer that Madonna did when she adopted from Malawi in 2006. In 2013, Madonna told Harper’s Bazaar that it was a real low point in her life.

“I didn’t know that trying to adopt a child was going to land me in another s**t storm. But it did. I was accused of kidnapping, child trafficking, using my celebrity muscle to jump ahead in the line, bribing government officials, witchcraft, you name it. Certainly I had done something illegal!”

Madonna added that she could understand people giving her a hard time for her onstage antics or even her Sex book, but she didn’t think that trying to save a child’s life was something she would be punished for. Friends tried to cheer her up by comparing all the backlash to labor pains.

One would think that after the backlash Madonna faced in 2006, she wouldn’t even think of adopting again, let alone adopt from Malawi. Well, this is Madonna we’re talking about. She discussed with Bazaar how she overcame another backlash in 2009.

“When I adopted Mercy James, I put my armor on. I tried to be more prepared. I braced myself. This time I was accused by a female Malawian judge that because I was divorced, I was an unfit mother. I fought the supreme court and I won. It took almost another year and many lawyers. I still got the s**t kicked out of me, but it didn’t hurt as much. And looking back, I do not regret one moment of the fight,” the original Queen of Pop added, while indicating that if one isn’t willing to fight for what they believe in, they shouldn’t even enter the ring.

Perhaps the rumors about Britney taking after Madonna in adopting from Malawi came about because Britney Spears has always been a Madonna fan, even going so far as to emulate certain aspects of Madonna’s career. Madonna is a mutual fan of Britney Spears, even serving as a mentor for the troubled star after her 2007 breakdown.

Last December, Metro reported that Madonna wished Britney Spears a happy birthday during her show at the O2 Arena in London. Perhaps we’ll get another Madonna and Britney duet soon and one that is better received than “Me Against the Music.”
