Mark Buehrle Throws Perfect Game

Chicago White Sox’s Mark Buehrle became the 18th person in Major League Baseball history to throw a perfect game Thursday (July 23).

For those not familiar with baseball, a perfect game is a game in which a pitcher pitches a victory that lasts a minimum of nine innings and in which no opposing player reaches base. According to Wikipedia, “the pitcher (or pitchers) cannot allow any hits, walks, hit batsmen, or any opposing player to reach base safely for any other reason.”

Buehrle needed 116 pitches to complete the feat, but was lucky toward the end when Dewayne Wise made a stunning over the fence catch off a big Gabe Kapler hit.

“I don’t know if it’s really sunk in yet,” Buehrle told the media after the game. “We have a short flight to Detroit – I’m sure it will be a little hectic later.” That later may not have come quickly with President Barack Obama calling him to congratulate him on the achievement.
