Season 2 of Smash is sure to be a surefire hit if their new casting is enough evidence. Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson, who seems to be a perfect fit for the Broadway musical show, will have a significant arc on Smash.

The Spielberg-produced hit NBC show will feature Jennifer Hudson as a big time Broadway singer, who’s presence will conflict with the ongoing story between rivals Karen (Katharine McPhee) and Ivy (Megan Hilty).  Hudson will play Veronica Moore, and, according to NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt, “[h]er character will represent someone who reached their Broadway dream but also paid a price for it.”

Smash also announced today that Moesha star Sheryl Lee Ralph will also be an addition to the star studded cast that now includes Will & Grace’s Sean Hayes as well. Ralph who began her career on the stage and was also nominated for a Tony Award seems like a great fit for Smash. Sheryl Lee Ralph will be playing Jennifer Hudson’s mother on the show.

Ralph’s most recent project has been with the Cartoon Network doing voice work for the show Young Justice as Amanda Walker.  Ralph has had a lively career being featured on sitcoms for years including The Parkers, It’s A Living, and voicing The Proud Family. Coincidentally, Ralph was nominated for her role as Deena Jones in the Broadway production of Dreamgirls, which earned Jennifer Hudson her Oscar for Best Supporting Actress when the play was adapted into a film in 2006.
