Tyrese Explains Why He’s ‘Kinda Freakin Out’ Over His Billboard Music Award Nomination

Singer Tyrese shared his excitement over being nominated for a Billboard Music Award with his social media followers and fans Sunday.

In a lengthy Instagram post, along with a photo advertising his album nomination, Tyrese first referenced all of the awards and accomplishments that he has received so far from his Black Rose album leading up to his Billboard nomination.

“That moment when you’ve already been blessed with an album that been #1 on the top 200 on billboard #1 in 15 countries, have a #1 single on billboard for my song SHAME for 16 weeks then you land 4 NAACP noms, 2 Grammy noms and now a Billboard nom for Top R&B Album…”

Even though the post started off with a self-centered tone, Tyrese cleared things up within the same message. He made it clear that he was not bragging intentionally. On the contrary, he is simply proud of the impact that his final solo album has made within the industry since its release, especially considering how it was apparently made.

“Nice! But I literally recorded this album in my backyard so I’m kinda freakin out in a very different way… We came we saw we conquered! All in the spirit of R&B!”

Tyrese’s album Black Rose was nominated for “Best R&B Album,” but it is facing some pretty tough competition — especially considering the commercial success of Rihanna’s Anti album and The Weeknd’s Beauty Behind the Madness.

However, based on the hard work and effort that Tyrese invested on his own into the Black Rose album, the success, accolades, and even nominations that his album has received truly do speak volumes.

In an August, 2015, interview with Radio.com, Tyrese was asked to explain what he was specifically looking for in order to consider his album “successful.”

“I’m not after a number. I’m after a statement.”

Tyrese’s Black Rose album apparently made a big impact with his fans and followers as well, especially when you consider the buzz that it is still generating on social media nearly one year after its initial release.

While promoting his Black Rose album, Tyrese continuously made it clear in every interview that it would be his final album as a solo artist. In addition to the standard album, he apparently wanted to make sure that he essentially gave his fans a “package” as an expression of his gratitude for sticking with him for the past two decades of his career.

“So now that I’m in it, this is year 20 for me. This is my last solo album, because I got a lot of other things happening, and my mind is all over the place. And so I’m saying, you know what? My fans have been rocking with me for 20 years. I’m gonna give them a double album; a Blu-ray documentary about the making of it; I’m gonna give them my third book.”

Even though his recording career as a solo artist may have ended with Black Rose, Tyrese still has plenty of other career options that will likely keep him busy for quite some time. He had a starring role in Ride Along 2 alongside Ice Cube and Kevin Hart earlier this year. Many longtime fans of the Fast and Furious movies are excited to see Tyrese as Roman Pearce in the upcoming eighth installment of the franchise, which is set for theatrical release next April.

In addition to his acting and singing careers, Tyrese Gibson is also a New York Times best-selling author. His first book, How to Get Out of Your Own Way was released in May of 2012, and his second book, Manology: Secrets of Your Man’s Mind Revealed was released in February of 2013.
