Sacramento Kings Rumors: New Logo Reportedly Leaked To The Internet, And Fans Seem To Love It

The Sacramento Kings will soon have a new logo, and a rumored leak of the design that hit the internet this weekend seems to be going over very well with fans.

The rumored new logos were discovered through a European trademark filing from the NBA, which was uncovered by SportsLogos. They show an updated look on the team’s previous logo, one the Kings used until the early 1990s. The logo was originally designed for the Cincinnati Royals, then stayed with the franchise in moves to Kansas City and Omaha and ultimately to northern California, the report noted.

There are some tweaks from this original logo and design, the report noted.

“The obvious changes are to the font, much more modern, the city name now also brought into the crown while the team name sits on a new strip between the crown and ball,” SportsLogos noted. “The mountain peaks are largely the same now with thicker lines adding the depth between them. The ball adds an additional seam. I feel it’s important to state once again that we don’t have the color information yet for this new set, trademark filings are almost always done so in black and white.”

With that color information left out, fans were left to wonder whether the team will keep its same purple and black color scheme.

Some are already making guesses as to what it will look like once the color is filled in.

The rumored new Sacramento Kings logo is already going over very well with fans, many of whom took to the internet to share their praise for it. It was a hit with the team’s older fans, bringing them back to the days of Mitch Richmond.

SB Nation was also big on the Kings’ new design, saying the “combination of a lion and a basketball may be the most beautiful piece of art ever created.”

It’s been a busy couple of years for NBA logo changes. Last year saw a host of teams make changes, most of them smaller tweaks. And in addition to the Sacramento Kings, the Utah Jazz are also expected to introduce a new logo design sometime this offseason.

At first glance, it appears the Sacramento Kings are doing a much better job than their Pacific Division counterparts, the Los Angeles Clippers, who last year stumbled to a much-criticized rebrand. The Clippers added black to their traditional colors of red, white, and blue, and introduced many other new elements surrounding the team. The move was a chance for new owner Steve Ballmer to put his own spin on the franchise without changing their city or nickname.

“We have one of the top teams in the NBA,” Ballmer said in a statement (via the Los Angeles Times) “and now we have introduced a new look that is bold, edgy, powerful and truly representative of us turning the page and entering a brand new age.”

But many fans didn’t see it that way, and the logo and the entire rebrand took plenty of criticism.

It’s not clear when the new Sacramento Kings logo might be officially unveiled. NBA teams traditionally release new schemes at the tail end of the NBA playoffs, so an official release could still be more than a month away. For fans of the franchise with the second-longest playoff drought, at least it gives them something to cheer about in June for once.
