‘Captain America: Civil War’ Star Robert Downey Jr. Will Appear As Iron Man In ‘Spider-Man Homecoming’

Spider-Man’s (Tom Holland) upcoming cameo in Captain America: Civil War isn’t the only time the character will team up with Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man. While fans gear up for the release of Civil War, Downey is set to appear alongside the web-slinger in Spider-Man: Homecoming. What can fans expect to unfold in the latest Spider-Man reboot?

According to E! Online, the new movie will center on Tony Stark’s relationship with Peter Parker. The storyline revolves around Parker’s attempts to discover his identity while finding his place in the world. Production for Spider-Man: Homecoming is set to begin sometime in June, while the film is scheduled for release next summer.

Apart from Holland and Downey, producers have cast a number of roles in the next Spider-Man flick. According to the Hollywood Reporter, this includes Marisa Tomei as Aunt May and Zendaya in a major role. Additionally, Tony Revolori (The Grand Budapest Hotel) and Laura Harrier (One Life to Live) have also joined the project.

The teaming up of Iron Man and Spider-Man marks an attempt to revitalize the Spider-Man franchise. In recent years, Sony has struggled to get the character noticed amongst the plethora of superhero films being released. Until now, Marvel has been unable to incorporate Spider-Man into its massive cinematic universe, because Sony held the exclusive rights.

However, that all changed last year when Marvel and Sony agreed to a deal. Marvel then hired Holland to portray the new Spider-Man in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War. While Holland and Downey are joining forces in Spider-Man’s standalone film, it’s unknown if Downey will appear in future installments.

Meanwhile, Cinema Blend is reporting that fans will get a first look at Holland in action when Civil War hits theaters next month. Considering Spider-Man’s relationship with Iron Man, he’ll likely side with Stark in the conflict against Captain America (Chris Evans).

Although fans will see a lot of Avengers in Captain America: Civil War, including Vision (Paul Bettany) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), there are a few characters that won’t be in the film. In fact, both The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) have not been included in any of the promotional materials or trailers for the film.

Recently, Downey hilariously confirmed that Thor is not going to be a part of the action. In a post to Twitter, Downey uploaded a GIF of Hemsworth fumbling Thor’s famous hammer. “This is why he wasn’t invited to Civil War,” Downey wrote in the post.

The GIF is a blooper from the very first Avengers film, when Hemsworth was still relatively new to the character. Thankfully, his hammer-wielding skills have improved a lot since then.

As fans are aware, Thor’s exclusion from the film is because the character is out searching for information about the Infinity Stones. The stones have been included in the past Avengers films and are a major part of the story in the upcoming Infinity Wars. At the same time, Thor’s mission will likely tie in with the character’s next film, Thor: Ragnarok.

Mark Ruffalo says a standalone 'Hulk' movie is a possibility

Excluding Thor and The Hulk from Civil War is also an attempt to make the teams a little more even. After all, The Hulk is pretty much indestructible, while Thor is a god. Having them take sides in the fight would unbalance the teams and make the fight unfair.

That being said, it will be interesting to see how Spider-Man plays into the storyline in Civil War. Whether or not he actually joins the fight is yet to be seen.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is set to open in theaters on July 7, 2017, while Captain America: Civil War opens on May 6.
