‘Game Of Thrones’ Season 6 Begins Sunday Amid Spoilers and Speculations

Game of Thrones Season 6 episodes with its sex, violence, and medieval power plays resumes Sunday. Get ready to meet fresh characters and encounter newer twists amid some prominent spoilers and curious questions over the fate of Jon Snow and Sansa Stark. Jon was knifed to death last season and viewers are curious whether Season 6 script would resurrect Jon Snow to salvage the war between the living and the deathly White Walkers.

Entertainment Weekly quoted writer-producer Bryan Cogman saying, the sixth season explores the mythology of the series in new ways. “Season 5 was in many ways our darkest. This season is still very dark, very intense, but it’s very much a next act,” Cogman said. So here is the deal; Games of Thrones Season 6 is ready to shock and appall in equal measure as it resumes on television screens, with millions of fans in eager anticipation.

The HBO series is based on George R.R. Martin’s fantasy novel, A Song of Ice and Fire. According to the Star Tribune, astute followers of Games of Thrones “think both the show, which premieres Sunday, and the novels leave plenty of room for Snow to be resurrected, perhaps by the Red Priestess, Melisandre, or reincarnated into the body of his pet direwolf, Ghost.”

“Press reports only serve to confirm these theories. Kit Harington, who plays Snow, was spotted on set near Belfast late last year and the actor is heavily featured in promotional material for the new season,” the report added.

So, those who’ve read the novels are equally in dilemma over viewers who haven’t.

Game of Thrones series remains popular for gripping narrative as characters battle out their dreams in Westeros and Essos, the fictional continents where heads and hand are severed, skulls smashed at the drop of hat. When such gory punishments fail to satiate the thirst for revenge, opponents are tortured by rats or burnt to smithereens by dragon fire. Game of Thrones is a universe which is perennially at the edge of pandemonium.

Why viewers love spending their Sunday nights bearing witness to gruesome atrocities is anyone’s guess. Dragons, zombies, giants, sorcerers, and sadists; all play their human and darker sides, manifest in depravity and foulness in the compelling drama of the Seven Kingdoms and beyond in Game of Thrones. All they want is the coveted, power-manifest Iron Throne as they try to outdo each other, justifying any strategy under the sun —murder and incest, black magic and human sacrifice to name a few.

Undeniably, Game of Thrones has all the elements that makes it a successful HBO entertainer. However, many consider the series as overtly sexist saying it too often markets sexual violence against women. In fact, the show has a manifest footage of soft-core porn in general, which seemingly is part of its winning formula.

While the structure of Martin’s books is there, the TV scripts have taken the liberty to introduce twists and narratives that take it beyond Martin’s books. According to the Denver Post, “The story will venture beyond the books this season, and HBO isn’t making previews available to critics, the better to avert spoilers.”

According to Forbes, “8 million viewers tuned in for the initial airing of season five premiere, which broke ratings records for Game of Thrones. Given all the cliffhangers from the previous season, this Sunday’s episode will probably garner even more viewers. Even if it doesn’t hit 10 million, it’s still worth it for HBO.”

Despite deviation from Martin’s books, Game of Thrones retains its tag of a complete entertainer with epic battle scenes, catchy liners, and handsome screen cast. The last five seasons did make it HBO’s revenue earning show and a global phenomenon. Will Game of Thrones Season 6 dig deeper in the pie of viewer rating is a matter of guess. Time to enjoy the series.
