Watch Prince’s Performance At The 2007 Super Bowl, Considered The Best Halftime Performance Of All Time

Prince turned in what was considered the greatest halftime performance of all time at the 2007 Super Bowl, and now you can watch it right here in honor of the music legend’s passing.

Prince was found dead in his Minnesota home on Thursday, prompting an outpouring of condolences from fans and musicians alike. Many remembered the music icon by flocking to his music, sending Prince’s songs to the top of iTunes. As Variety noted, within hours of his death being announced, all of the top ten best-selling albums were from Prince’s collection and the top eight singles belonged to him as well.

Many others remembered Prince for one of his greatest live performances of all time, a showstopping concert in the pouring rain in Miami at halftime of the 2007 Super Bowl. Those who may not remember — or just want to see it again — can watch Prince’s Super Bowl performance below.

Many consider Prince’s concert to be the best halftime performance of all time. Rolling Stone (which actually put his performance at No. 2, behind only U2’s performance in 2002), noted that, in front of hundreds of millions of viewers worldwide, Prince rose to the occasion.

Everybody knew Prince would make this a freakfest for the ages. But he exceeded all expectations, in the middle of a Miami thunderstorm. A Foo Fighters cover? “We Will Rock You” into “Let’s Go Crazy”? “All Along the Watchtower”? An epic guitar-hero jam on “Purple Rain”? There was a feeling that nobody knew what surprise this sexy MF would bust out next – at a high-profile event like the Super Bowl, it was a historic blast of rock & roll arrogance. Total mastery. Total cool.

While many fans are remembering Prince by cranking up his music or going on a YouTube binge of his music videos, others in Minnesota are taking a more direct approach, KTSP noted. Some gathered outside his home, laying flowers and snapping photographs. Others came to an all-night party at First Avenue, the downtown nightclub where much of the movie Purple Rain was filmed and where Prince started his career.

Many organizations across the state joined in, remembering Prince in unique ways. The Minnesota Twins illuminated their scoreboard in purple, and the Wild and Vikings paid tribute to him as well.

Local politicians also joined in remembering Prince.

“Like all Minnesotans I am shocked and saddened today,” U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar said in a statement. “I grew up with Prince’s music. He was a superstar composer, an amazing performer and a music innovator with a fierce belief in the independence of his art. He made ‘Purple Rain’ a household name, First Avenue a landmark, and brought international fame to Minnesota’s music scene. I was always so proud to say ‘Prince, he is from Minnesota.’ We grieve his loss today.”

Director Spike Lee called him a “funny cat” with a “great sense of humor,” and the Reverend Jesse Jackson honored Prince for standing up for the rights of artists. Even President Barack Obama weighed in, releasing a statement calling him a “creative icon” and noting that “nobody’s spirit was stronger.”
