Stephen Colbert Takes Hillary Clinton To A New York Deli For Her Appearance On ‘The Late Show’

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert has been a prominent platform for 2016 presidential candidates, with both Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders already sitting down on Stephen Colbert’s sofa to put their cases forward. With that in mind, an appearance from the Democratic frontrunner, Hillary Clinton, was a given. However, when she appeared on Stephen Colbert’s show on Monday night, her appearance took a slightly different tone.

According to the Daily Beast, Hillary Clinton opted out of a traditional sit-down interview at the Sullivan Theater in front of the show’s live studio audience. Instead, host Stephen Colbert took the former First Lady to a deli in New York City for what was evidently a pre-recorded interview. Many commentators have already heralded the differences between this interview with Hillary Clinton and Stephen Colbert’s previous hard-hitting political bashes, which was especially prevalent by the cozier vibe of the deli Colbert had chosen to conduct the interview within.

The light and fluffy theme of the interview continued as Colbert and Clinton shared lunch at the deli. Stephen was keen to find out exactly what the worst food Hillary had eaten on the campaign trail was, hinting towards one of the former Secretary of State’s visits to Iowa. According to Hollywood Life, Clinton decided not to provide Colbert with an answer, instead praising any food that comes on a stick.

Clinton went on to tell Stephen Colbert that she always worries about eating any food in front of the press, confessing that they could get a horrific shot at any time if she makes a terrible gaffe. Colbert then went on to provide Clinton with some advice around eating in public, which had the Democratic frontrunner in stitches.

There was still time for some political discussion, however. Many would have assumed that Stephen Colbert would use the interview to focus on Clinton’s rival for the Democratic nomination, Bernie Sanders. Instead, Colbert appeared to presume that Clinton would win the nomination and instead chose to focus on Donald Trump. Stephen Colbert jumped straight in by asking Clinton what she had in common with the Republican candidate. In an attempt to pivot the conversation away from Trump, Clinton told Colbert “I’m not sure yet. I’m not sure what I have in common with him”. Clinton then used the opportunity to tell viewers that she’d be much more at home in the White House running the country than taking part in what she admitted has been an uninspiring campaign.

This isn’t the first time Hillary Clinton has appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert however. She appeared on the show six months ago at a very different stage in the campaign. Before he hosted The Late Show, Hillary Clinton made two prior appearances on The Colbert Report, one during the 2008 primary campaign and more recently in 2014 to promote the release of her memoir.

Hillary Clinton’s sit-down with Stephen Colbert came prior to the New York primary, that she so desperately needs to win. However, the approach taken with this particular Colbert interview is a very unique one, and it appears that Clinton’s team have pushed for a more cozy chat over Colbert’s traditional hard-hitting interviews. Either way, it’ll be interesting to see if Colbert adopts the approach with other politicians in the future.

For many though, they’ll be disappointed that Stephen Colbert didn’t push Clinton on some of the more pressing issues, especially on the eve of such an important primary election. In fact, it’s only added to claims that Stephen Colbert is losing his touch when it comes to the hard pressing political interviews he’s known for.
