NFL Rumors: Brian Hoyer Leaving Houston Texans For Denver Broncos

NFL rumors have started swirling around Brian Hoyer. The former Houston Texans quarterback was released a couple of days ago. Hoyer was released because the team signed Brock Osweiler to a mega contract this offseason. There are several teams in need a quarterback. According to USA Today, the Denver Broncos might potentially be one of those teams. The Broncos lost Peyton Manning to retirement, then they lost backup Osweiler to the Texans.

Peyton Manning retiring left a big hole to fill at quarterback for the Denver Broncos. John Elway and the Broncos tried to resign backup Brock Osweiler. Last season, Peyton Manning was benched in favor of Osweiler. During the Week 17 game against the San Diego Chargers, Osweiler was benched in favor of Manning. The veteran led the Broncos to win an NFL Championship. Winning a Super Bowl last season might have bought Elway some time with the fans and ownership.

The Denver Broncos attempted to resign Brock Osweiler, but the former Arizona State Sun Devils star decided he needed a fresh start next season. That left the Broncos with only second-year man Trevor Siemian. The former Northwestern Wildcats quarterback has zero experience… unless you want to count taking a knee. John Elway will be looking for a new quarterback this offseason. There’s not a lot left in free agency.

The Denver Broncos traded for Mark Sanchez from the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this offseason. The Eagles decided to resign Sam Bradford to huge contract. Bradford will be making an average of $17 million for the next two seasons. Philadelphia then added Chase Daniel to the mix. They signed him to a $21 million deal for the next three years. Daniel was on the roster when Doug Pederson was the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs. The Broncos gave up a seventh round selection to acquire Mark Sanchez. Denver now might have their starter.

The Houston Texans decided to relieved Brian Hoyer of his duties with the team. Once the team inked Brock Osweiler to a contract, Hoyer felt that his days with the Texans were coming to a close. Then, the team resigned Brandon Weeden to a two-year contract. The signing of the former Oklahoma State Cowboys quarterback signaled an end to Hoyer’s tenure with the Texans.

The Denver Broncos have two of the best wide receivers in the NFL. Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders each had 1,000 yards season. Both Thomas and Sanders had a down year. Their decline this season was due to the poor play of the Broncos quarterback. Both Peyton Manning and Brock Osweiler had their ups and downs all season. Manning this season threw more interceptions than touchdowns. It is the first time in his career he failed to throw ten touchdowns. Osweiler had an average season this past year. That was enough to impress the Houston Texans.

The Denver Broncos had one of the best defenses in the NFL. There were no weaknesses in their defense. The defensive line was led by Malik Jackson and Derek Wolfe. Both players got new contracts this offseason. Wolfe signed a four-year deal worth $36.7 million. Jackson got a huge deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars. They signed him a six-year deal worth $90 million. The linebacker crew was led by Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware. Miller, who was franchised tag this offseason, will be getting a mega deal soon. Danny Trevathan signed a four-year deal with the Chicago Bears.

The Denver Broncos are looking for a new starting quarterback this summer. Brian Hoyer is a very solid player. Signing the former Houston Texans quarterback could give them what they need for now. With Hoyer, the Broncos could buy themselves time to find a long-term solution at quarterback.
