NFL Rumors: San Francisco 49ers Drafting Jared Goff

NFL rumors have been swirling around Jared Goff. The former California Golden Bears star is projected to be a top ten selection in this year’s NFL Draft. The Los Angeles Rams made waves by trading for the number one overall pick. The Rams are projected to take a quarterback with the selection. It will be either Goff or Carson Wentz. Los Angeles might decide to pick Wentz. Things will be interesting after that for Goff. According to NFL.com, Goff will drop down to the San Francisco 49ers.

The San Francisco 49ers are in need of a franchise quarterback. A couple of years ago, Colin Kaepernick was considered to be the guy. Last season, Kaepernick had a horrible year and was benched. He remains on the roster but his status with the team remains in doubt. When Chip Kelly was hired, there was hope for the quarterback. Kelly’s offensive system could be the perfect fit for Kaepernick’s abilities.

Last season, Blaine Gabbert was moved into the starting unit when Colin Kaepernick was benched. The former Missouri Tigers star did a solid job for the San Francisco 49ers. Gabbert isn’t the long term answer at quarterback. He might be able to fill in for another year or two.

New head coach Chip Kelly would love to get a quarterback he can mold into his system. In the most recent NFL Mock Draft, Jared Goff could possibly drop if he isn’t selected first overall. Goff might still be on the board when it’s time for the San Francisco 49ers to pick. Many scouts believe Goff might be a better fit for the 49ers than Carson Wentz. The former California Golden Bears star has the experience and skills set suited for Kelly’s fast paced spread offense. Goff has the potential to be San Francisco’s next franchise quarterback.

Chip Kelly is considered a quarterback guru. Kelly earned a winning record with the Philadelphia Eagles with a mediocre group of quarterbacks. Last season, Kelly traded for Sam Bradford, who had a solid season but was coming off a torn ACL. A couple of years ago, Mark Sanchez was starting for Kelly. He posted the highest quarterback rating in his eight year career. During Kelly’s first year with the Eagles, he had Nick Foles. The former Arizona State Sun Devils star posted career high numbers while running Kelly’s offense. That being said, the next quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers might have a nice year under Kelly.

Jared Goff has proven, in the college ranks, that he is one of the best quarterbacks there. He spent three seasons with the University of California Golden Bears. Goff has shown that he will continue to get better as he progresses each year. He improved dramatically each season and broke numerous records. Jared thrived in Sonny Dykes’ Air Raid offense. Goff is not considered as a dual threat quarterback. He is very mobile in the pocket but is not a threat to run downfield.

The San Francisco 49ers have many holes to fill this off season. The team could possibly draft Myles Jack. The former UCLA Bruins star is coming off a torn ACL last summer. Jack was recently called a more athletic Ray Lewis. The 49ers lost both Patrick Willis and Chris Borland to retirement. Now, all they have left to man the middle is Navorro Bowman. They will need someone to play alongside him. Jack might be a perfect fit for the 49ers. He can play multiple positions on the defensive side of the ball. Jack can move from inside linebacker to safety.

For the San Francisco 49ers, selecting Jared Goff at number seven would be considered a steal. They could potentially get a franchise quarterback. Chip Kelly would get his ideal player.
