#NoStanaNoCastle — Fans Protest Stana Katic Being Fired From ‘Castle’

#NoStanaNoCastle is the hashtag that’s taking over social media. Ever since word came out that Stana Katic was being fired from ABC’s popular TV show Castle, fans have been taking to Twitter, Instagram, Tumbler, and Facebook to express their anger and disappointment.

Deadline announced that Stana Katic, who plays NYPD Captain Kate Beckett, and Tamala Jones, who plays medical examiner Lanie Parish, will not be returning for the show’s ninth season. Stana Katic was gracious, ladylike, and professional when asked about being forced to leave the show.

“Rather then distract from what was an amazing experience, I would just like to say that I’m very grateful to ABC for giving me the opportunity to be a part of a much beloved show. Thank you to the fans.”

Stana Katic’s fans are upset about the matter, and they are not hesitating to say so, with the hashtag #NoStanaNoCastle as their battle cry.

Even comic book legend Marv Wolfman joined in on the lamentation.

One fan pointed out that Castle had, up until now, “one of the most diverse casts in police procedurals.” However, with the female lead leaving and the only remaining female minority leaving — the African-American female captain having left last season — the show is now considerably less diverse.

Castle, currently in its eighth season, first premiered as a mid-season replacement on March 9, 2009. The show is officially listed as a crime-drama, but it owes as much to Nick and Nora Charles of The Thin Man as it does to police procedurals like Cagney and Lacey, Hill Street Blues, or Dragnet, with a strong dose of Barney Miller‘s humor. The show focuses on the relationship between best-selling mystery author Richard Castle, played by Nathan Fillion of Firefly fame, and NYPD Detective Kate Beckett, played (until now) by Stana Katic. The mayor of New York City, a fan of Castle’s, gives permission for him to shadow Beckett and her co-workers, Det. Kevin Ryan and Det. Javier Esposito, to seek inspiration for his next mystery novel. Castle’s ability to think outside the box often helps the NYPD, and he and Beckett develop a Moonlighting-type relationship, eventually marrying in the show’s seventh season.

The fans taking to Twitter, Facebook, Tumbler, and Instagram with #NoStanaNoCastle do not think the show can survive if Stana Katic’s character is killed off or written out of the show. Some are already promising not to watch the ninth season if it does not include Stana Katic as Kate Beckett.

Fan fury forced AMC to change its mind about permitting texting in movie theaters in less than 48 hours. Some fans of Castle are hoping to change ABC’s mind. Others are merely venting their frustration and anger, and as The Inquistr reported earlier, making sure ABC knows that they will be boycotting the show if Stana Katic is fired.
