Color Me Badd On ‘I Love The ‘90s’ Tour: ‘It Feels Like A Family Reunion’

Color Me Badd was one of the biggest pop/R&B groups of the 1990s, so it’s no surprise that 25 years after they first topped the charts, they’re part of the I Love the ’90s Tour that recently kicked off in South Carolina. The reunited Color Me Badd features original members Bryan Abrams, Mark Calderon, and Kevin Thornton, who join fellow ’90s superstars Vanilla Ice, Kid ‘N Play, Tone Loc, Salt-N-Pepa, and more for the ultimate throwback concert.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Color Me Badd singer Bryan Abrams explained why people are so nostalgic about their band and the other ’90s stars headlining the show.

“People are just starving for some of that old sound,” Abrams told EW. “I think they’re starving for some real, Auto-Tuneless music.”

Abrams went on to say that the tour feels like a family reunion because Color Me Badd toured with several of the other artists during their early ’90s heyday. The singer compared the tour to going back to high school. But he also pointed out that with age comes an even better show for the fans.

“What we’re most excited about, is to show people that we still got it. If anything, I think we’re a little better now than when we were younger because we’re not caught up in all the fun and games that we used to have on the road. It’s one big party between the fans and us.”

As for what type of crowd the I Love The ’90s Tour could draw, the Color Me Badd singer is banking on the fact that the group’s now-grown-up fan base will be nostalgic enough that they will want to bring their own kids to the show.

“Now, our sound has been in the past and in the closet long enough that people are missing that,” he said. “All those people that were kids, they’re grownups now. They have kids and they want to share that old music with their kids, just like my parents introduced me to Aerosmith and the Commodores and Michael Jackson.”

Color Me Badd hit it big in 1991 with a pair of No. 1 hits, “I Adore Mi Amor” and “All 4 Love.” Their song “I Wanna Sex You Up” was also a smash hit, and the group went on to sell more than 12 million records worldwide.

Color Me Badd became such a part of ’90s pop culture that they made a cameo as themselves on Beverly Hills 90210, turning up at the Peach Pit to the shock of Brenda and Brandon (Shannen Doherty, Jason Priestley). Since then, Color Me Badd’s music has turned up on everything from the movie New Jack City to Glee.

The original Color Me Badd featured Bryan Abrams, Mark Calderon, Kevin Thornton, and Sam Watters. The group, which hailed from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, initially broke up in 2000, but Abrams, Thornton, and Calderon reformed Color Me Badd in 2010. Sam Watters never rejoined the group and went on to become a record producer, working with Jessica Simpson and later taking American Idol alums like Kelly Clarkson, Fantasia, and Blake Lewis under his wing. Watters married Idol contestant Tamyra Gray 10 years ago.

Color Me Badd fans should check out the schedule for the I Love the ’90s Tour. According to Rolling Stone, the tour will run through October and will hit Nashville, Las Vegas, Cleveland, and dozens more major cities.
