David Chase Talks ‘Sopranos’ Prequel In Interview

It has been a long time since the world of television has had any news about David Chase’s masterpiece, The Sopranos. Chase recently conducted an interview with Deadline about his upcoming A Ribbon Of Dreams miniseries. Of course, it wasn’t very long until questions about The Sopranos and its infamous ending arose.

The Sopranos is known as one of the greatest television shows of all time. Since it aired in 1999, the show was nominated for 298 awards and took home 118 of them.

It has been nine years since The Sopranos’ finale left fans completely heartbroken. The way the show ended was controversial, and it left millions of fans totally unsatisfied. Until this very day, fans of the show still continue to question Chase and the rest of the cast about what the ending really means.

Any continuation of the original show has been ruled out due to the death of the actor who portrayed Tony Soprano, James Gandolfini. Not to mention that Chase had no intention of continuing the show even when Gandolfini was alive.

The Sopranos never hitting the big screen may have been a blessing in disguise for Chase and the rest of the crew. Television shows that become feature films usually never do well in the box office. As badly as fans want feature films made of their favorite television show, they always turn out to be mediocre. Entourage was a very fine example of that.

Warning! If you have never watched The Sopranos, there is a major spoiler alert ahead!

To give a quick recap of the finale, Tony Soprano and his wife were sitting down in a diner-like restaurant called Holsten’s. The place of choice for the final scene is actually a well-known ice cream parlor and eatery in real life.

Tony walks in to Holsten’s and sits down. His wife and son come in a few minutes after he does. A man in a members only jacket sneaks in front of Tony’s son, Anthony Jr., when he walks in.

Meadow, Tony’s daughter, is running late and appears in the scene later. The camera emphasizes the man in the members only jacket when he gets up and walks to the bathroom. Meadow finally arrives and rushes in. Tony looks up when the door to the diner opens and the screen turns black.

Most of The Sopranos’ cast was not too crazy about the ending, either. Despite heavy criticism from fans, Chase thinks it couldn’t have ended more perfectly. He still has not confirmed whether or not Tony died in the scene or not.

From the “members only theory” to Bobby Baccalieri’s infamous “you probably don’t even hear it when it happens theory,” many fans have assumed Tony Soprano is dead.

Ever since that fatal moment, fans have never truly gotten over the way the show was brought to an end. Even though the show ended years ago, the cast of The Sopranos and Chase himself are still questioned about the ending. However, Deadline reported a statement that Chase made that may bring The Sopranos to the limelight once again.

When asked about a potential prequel to The Sopranos, Chase responded with a very intriguing answer.

“I’ve had people talk to me about that. I’ve had conversations with some movie studios that want to do it as a film. So far I’ve rejected the idea but I certainly wouldn’t do it as a television show. I’m always disinclined to say, ‘No I’ll never do it.’ But I think I’ll never do it. I’m disinclined to say that because I don’t want my thinking to be constrained. I’ve said it from the beginning: If I had a really good idea and I thought it could be really entertaining and it wouldn’t upset what was done I might do it.”

Chase does say that some movie studios want to do the prequel as a film. He clearly rejected their proposals and ruled television out automatically. As far as the film goes, Chase never really says he is totally opposed to the idea.

His answer sounds as if he didn’t like the direction the movie studios want to take with his masterpiece. He also says he will probably “never do it.” However, how many people in the entertainment industry have said they probably wouldn’t do something and then ended up doing it?

Maybe if a movie studio brings along an idea that Chase actually likes, The Sopranos could finally hit the big screen. Until then, fans are going to have to wait in agony to see the younger version of everyone’s favorite mob boss.
