Candy Crowley To Moderate Presidential Debate


Candy Crowley will become the first woman in 20 years to moderate a presidential debate this October.

Crowly, CNN’s chief political correspondent; Jim Lehrer of PBS; and Bob Schieffer of CBS News will host three presidential debates this October. Lehrer will moderate the first debate in Denver on October 3, and Schieffer will host the third debate in Florida on October 22. Crowley will host the second debate between President Obama and Republican Mitt Romney on October 16.

Nola.com notes that a debate between vice president Joe Biden and Republican challenger Paul Ryan will also be hosted by a woman. Martha Raddatz of ABC News will host the vice president debate on October 11 from Kentucky.

According to News 4 Jax, Crowley will be the first woman to moderate a debate since Carole Simpson did the same in 1992. Barbara Walters moderated two presidential debates, one in 1976 and the other in 1984.

Women’s rights are expected to play a big part in the 2012 election. According to Nola.com, prominent female politicians like House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi urged the Commission on Presidential Debates to choose a woman for at least one of the debates.
