Ian Somerhalder & Nina Dobrev To Reunite For ‘Vampire Diaries’ Final Season?

Ian Somerhalder has revealed that Season 8 of The Vampire Diaries will be the show’s last, and fans are wondering if perhaps Nina Dobrev will rejoin the show, and her ex-boyfriend, to close out the series.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Ian Somerhalder announced that Season 8 of The Vampire Diaries would be the last, and that everyone is going to work to end the series in a respectable way, but does that way include Nina Dobrev and her character Elena Gilbert returning?

“We have decided to do one last season to really do the story justice. My role is shifting in the show and we have a lot to do, basically,” Somerhalder told fans at Walker Stalker Con in Nashville.

As for a Nina Dobrev’s return to The Vampire Diaries, Ian Somerhalder didn’t say one way or the other if his ex-girlfriend would be coming back to help tie up the loose ends as the series ends its run. However, Hollywood Life reports that the chances of Nina coming back to the show as Elena Gilbert are good.

“When the show ends Nina will be a part of it some way shape or form. She is 10,000 percent coming back.”

As many Vampire Diaries fans know, Nina Dobrev’s character, Elena, is currently in a suspended sleep state thanks to a spell that linked Elena’s sleep with her friend Bonnie’s life. As long as Bonnie is alive, Elena will stay asleep in her coffin.

Recently, Kat Graham, who plays Bonnie on the show, revealed that she would be leaving the series after Season 8 no matter what the future of the show would be. This got fans excited for a possible Nina Dobrev return, and of course, a big reunion with Ian Somerhalder. However, how much of Season 8 Nina will appear in has yet to be determined.

“At this very moment, it is expected that Nina will be a part of the show on a very limited basis. There is still tons of time to figure it all out and deal with proper scheduling, but it is going to be a less is more type of situation to finish her story.”

Since Nina Dobrev left The Vampire Diaries after Season 6, the show has declined in the ratings. The CW even moved the young adult drama to the dreaded Friday night spot in the lineup, which is usually a bad sign for shows since Friday nights are not usually a night that gathers big TV ratings.

If Nina Dobrev would return to the series and reunite with Ian Somerhalder, ratings would likely rise. The character of Elena, as well as her relationship with Somerhalder’s character, Damon Salvatore, has been greatly missed by fans of the show throughout Season 7, which has focused more on Damon and his brother Stefan’s bond than on romance.

Elena returning to Mystic Falls to reunite with Damon and live happily ever after seems like a great way to end the series, in addition to giving the rest of the characters satisfying endings. If anything happens, fans want to see Damon and Elena’s future have closure above any other story line. Thankfully, it looks like that might actually happen if Nina Dobrev returns to the show and reunites with Ian Somerhalder.

The fans are only hoping that exes Nina and Ian can work together peacefully and that there is no bad blood or awkwardness between them because Damon and Elena’s chemistry needs to be spot on for fans to feel they’ve ended the show properly.
