‘Outlander’ Star Sam Heughan Reveals How He Gets Ready For All Of Those Steamy Sex Scenes

Sam Heughan has spent a good deal of his time on Outlander looking sexy and shirtless. Fortunately for fans, the actor looks good bearing it all in his role as Jamie Fraser. With the series currently kicking off Season 2, Heughan sat down and discussed his workout regime that keeps him in tip-top shape for all of those steamy Outlander scenes.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Heughan credited his love for running with keeping in great shape. Heughan has participated in several marathons over the years and explained how his passion for running started and why he enjoys it so much.

“It just started with strapping on a pair of trainers and going outside. I was traveling a lot as a young actor, and while in a new city I’d want to see the place, so I would just put on my trainers and go for a jog,” Heughan shared. “And the more I did that, the more I found I was traveling longer and longer distances. I just fell into it.”

Clearly, Heughan’s love for running has given him one of the fittest bodies in television, which Outlander fans have fully come to appreciate. Along with training for marathons, Heughan exercises in order to bulk up on muscle. For that purpose, Heughan stated that he does “functional weightlifting and CrossFit type stuff.”

Apart from his intense workout regime, Heughan has started his own fitness movement called My Peak Challenge. The fitness challenge helps promote awareness for leukemia and lymphoma and encourages people to spend time outdoors. So far, Heughan has been able to raise some $170,000, all of which goes towards the non-profit organization Bloodwise.

“I collaborated with my trainer in the UK and Bloodwise — a leukemia and lymphoma charity — and we created an event where I share my love of the outdoors,” Heughan explained. “I’d been doing a lot of hiking in Scotland and discovering my country, so we built a charity that allows people to help themselves while they help others.”

Speaking of celebrating his heritage, Just Jared is reporting that Heughan recently participated in the New York Tartan Day Parade as the event’s Grand Marshall. The outlet released photos of the event, which feature Heughan celebrating the day in a Scottish kilt despite the rain and dreary weather.

Meanwhile, the second season of Outlander has finally arrived. While fans wait in earnest for the season to develop, Sam Heughan shared how much the series has meant to Scotland during an interview with the Scotsman.

Outlander is great for the whole film industry in Scotland. This season there’s more time travel and a lot of surprises in store. There are more languages too, French as well as the Scots and Gaelic because we go to France to stop Charles Edward Stuart going to Culloden,” Heughan revealed. “Outlander is a show that celebrates Scotland and its culture and it has hit a vein in people’s imagination. It’s great that there’s such a wide audience and that there’s something about Scotland people feel they belong to. In Scotland, we’re closer to our past than other countries.”

Of course, along with the change in scenery, fans can expect a lot of romance to unfold between Jamie and Claire (Caitriona Balfe). However, as fans will undoubtedly discover in the new season, the couple will face their share of challenges before the end.

“Jamie is no longer safe in Scotland but they want to go back there to raise a family and they want to try and resolve the political situation too,” Balfe shared. “There’s a strong sense of home and being displaced, and that’s a theme a lot of people can relate to in a world that’s so global. Also, Claire is anxious about becoming a mother.”

The new season of Outlander airs Saturday nights on Starz.
