Is Felicity Jones Rey’s Mother In ‘Star Wars Rogue One’? Daisy Ridley Has Perfect Response

Ever since the trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story premiered last week, there’s been a rumor sizzling across the internet that Felicity Jones’ character, Jyn Erso, is actually the mother of Daisy Ridley’s Rey from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Obviously, we’re not going to find out if that’s true until Rogue One is released. But that hasn’t stopped Daisy Ridley from being asked whether the theories that Felicity Jones’ Jyn Erso is Rey’s mom are true.

The 24-year-old actress had a rather perfect response to this question, as she stated, via Game Spot, “I’m not being funny you guys, but just because she’s white and got brown hair… it doesn’t mean she’s my mom.”

But while Daisy Ridley dismissed this speculation, she did in fact reveal and confirm that she knows exactly who Rey’s parents are, having been told of the character’s parentage in The Force Awakens.

Obviously, the English actress didn’t think it was the right time to reveal who Rey’s mother and father are. In fact, she insists that she finds the entire discussion over Rey’s lineage rather funny.

“I think the amazing thing about Episode VII is that Finn and Rey don’t come from anywhere and they find a place,” Daisy Ridley declared. “To me, it’s funny that people think is so important, because I guess it is. But I don’t really think it is because regardless of where you come from, where you go is the thing… you’re moving forward, and you can make a family; you can find people who you love.”

Ridley continued, “And so I think the progression Rey is making and the people she’s meeting and the relationships she’s making now are kind of more important than where she comes from. But that’s just me.”

Meanwhile, Daisy Ridley also discussed further details regarding Rey, specifically whether she is a Jedi, which was heavily teased in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. But Ridley insisted that she doesn’t know whether or not Rey is a Jedi.

“I don’t know if I am a Jedi… I don’t think I am,” Ridley continued. “We’ve had this debate as to whether Leia is because she uses her Force powers. Just because she’s not like, ‘Oh, I’m going on an adventure,’ like Luke doesn’t make her any less Forceful.”

Of course, we have at least two more Star Wars films to learn more about Rey’s past, as Daisy Ridley is currently hard at work filming Star Wars: Episode VIII while she will follow this up with Star Wars: Episode IX.

Meanwhile, we’ll probably get an answer as to whether Felicity Jones’ Jyn Erso is actually Rey’s mother at some point in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. And there’s still every chance that it could be true.

Not just because of the strikingly similar appearances of both Felicity Jones and Daisy Ridley, but because Rogue One is set just before Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, which in turn is set approximately 30 years before Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This means that the timeline fits, while we’re also none the wiser about what Rey’s last name is, which is being kept secret from us for a very specific reason.

Rey’s surname being Skywalker seems a little bit too obvious. But the origin story for Rey’s mother would be a unique way of introducing us to her lineage. We’ll see if that’s actually the case when Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is released on December 16.
