Washington, DC (AHN) – A Louisiana baby product company issued a voluntary recall of its gel-filled teethers after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found bacteria in the liquid gel that could cause serious illness in people with weakened immune systems.

The company, Luv N’ Care, Ltd, from Monroe, La. makes the teethers under the brand names Nuby, Cottontails and Playschool. The FDA said it found the gel inside the products contain bacillus subtilis and bacillus circulans bacteria. No illnesses have been reported, the FDA said on its Web site.

These bacteria typically do not cause illness in adults, children and infants, but the FDA said people with weakened immune systems could experience symptoms like stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea and in rare cases, serious disease, when exposed.

Luv N’ Care has ceased production of the teethers and has notified distributors to return any in their inventory.

Consumers with questions may call the company at 1-800-256-2399, ext. 3106 for more information.
