Poll Finds Support Slipping For Obama’s Healthcare Plan

Washington, D.C. (AHN) – Public support for President Barack Obama’s health care plan has begun to fall as the legislation continues to languish on Capitol Hill.

In a nationwide Washington Post-ABC News poll released on Monday, 59% of Americans approve of the job Obama is doing in office. However, only 49% of Americans support the president’s plan for healthcare reform, marking the first time his support has dipped below 50%.

In April, the same poll found 57% of Americans supported White House efforts to overhaul the country’s healthcare system. But that number has been falling as Republicans and Democrats debate the merits of several options including public plans, private plans and a mix of the two. By June, only 53% of Americans still backed Obama’s health agenda.

The poll also found American support has waned for the president’s economic plans as well. In March, 60% of Americans supported his economic agenda to reform Wall Street, which included issuing a stimulus. Now, only 52% of Americans believe in Obama’s plan to rebuild jobs and secure the future of key industries.

Last Friday, there was some movement on the president’s agenda as the House Ways and Means Committee passed a $1 trillion healthcare bill. The bill includes a public option plan that will be funded by taxing the wealthiest Americans a surcharge as high as 5.4 percent.

While Republicans blasted the bill, the American Medical Association offered its support for the ‘America’s Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009′ which will now face a full House vote.

It is one of several several efforts by Democrats in Congress to overhaul the nation’s healthcare system and extend coverage to the 47 million uninsured, one of the top priorities of the Obama administration in its first year.
