Jai Courtney Calls ‘Suicide Squad’ Director David Ayer ‘Psychotic’, ‘One Of The Greats’

Actor Jai Courtney opened up about Suicide Squad director David Ayer recently, referring to him as “psychotic” but “one of the greats.”

During an interview with Collider, Courtney even went as far as claiming that David Ayer has a great future ahead of him as a director.

“[David Ayer] is the man. He’s one of the greats. I think he has an amazing future ahead of him and I hope we get to work together again.”

The Suicide Squad actor took his compliments of David Ayer to a different level when he explained exactly how Jai admires David while also fearing him at the same time.

“I have nothing but admiration for him, and small amounts of fear. That about sums it up. He loves that attention to detail, and he’s not interested in comfort. Nothing is about making anything easy for anyone. And that’s not about making it hard, it’s just that when you’re off center, it creates a space for wonderful things to happen. That’s the world he likes to play in, and I think that’s very exciting.”

According to ComicBook.com, Jai Courtney made it clear to himself in the past that he would never get involved with a comic book movie. Thinking about how the market was already completely saturated with superhero and comic book movie adaptations, it is easy to see why so many people believe that the genre has passed its point of exhaustion on the big screen.

However, the Suicide Squad movie was able to appeal to Jai Courtney primarily because of David Ayer instead of the other way around.

The report states that when the Fury director asked Jai Courtney to join the cast of Suicide Squad back in 2014, Jai “pushed his feelings aside and leaped at the chance to work with a director he admired.”

When Collider asked Jai Courtney what surprised him the most about the Suicide Squad movie shoot, he focused on the unpredictable camaraderie of the ensemble cast.

“What was most surprising was the camaraderie on set. It’s easy to imagine, on a film of that scale with a cast of that scale, you wouldn’t find the family that we did in each other. That was really awesome. You can’t predict those things. You can’t fashion it out of something else. Sometimes it works great, others not. It really was a familial experience for all of us, which was really cool, man.”

The Suicide Squad cast list is definitely filled with rising stars and Hollywood box-office heavy-hitters, along with award winners and nominees.

Perhaps some of the biggest names that stand out among the crowded cast are Will Smith (Deadshot), Jared Leto (Joker), Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), Jai Courtney (Boomerang) and Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn). However, the overall talent and star quality of the cast is further enhanced by performances from actors like Joel Kinnaman (Robocop), Jay Hernandez (Takers, World Trade Center) and Adewale Akinnouye-Agbaje (Lost, Oz, Concussion).

In addition to seeing such a powerful cast together on the big screen, Jai Courtney also stated that the boundaries being pushed and crossed in the Suicide Squad movie should be loved and appreciated by its audience. Without giving away hardly any details about the movie, the Divergent star made it clear that Suicide Squad will present moviegoers with something that is fresh and exciting to see on the big screen.

“The boundaries we’re pushing within that genre. It’s so hard to talk about without saying anything, and as you know, I can’t say anything. I think people can see from the material that is out there that there is something new and exciting that they haven’t seen within this realm that Suicide Squad will offer. We’re all just pumped to share that with the world.”

Jai Courtney and the rest of the cast will premiere their highly-anticipated performances when Suicide Squad is finally released in theaters August 5.
