Watch 2016 MTV Movie Awards Live Stream: ‘Star Wars,’ ‘Straight Outta Compton,’ ‘Deadpool’ Highlight Wild Event

The 2016 MTV Movie Awards, always the wildest and funniest award show of the jam-packed awards show season, will stream live online Sunday — though actually, the live stream will actually be a stream of the MTV broadcast of the no-holds-barred ceremony that took place the night before.

This year’s MTV Movie Awards show was taped Saturday, April 9, on a back lot at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California, and as hosted by HBO Ballers star and former professional wrestler Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and comedian Kevin Hart. Because the show was taped in advance, there’s no suspense as to who won the major awards, or any awards. But at the MTV Movie Awards, the winners aren’t really the point.

Watch Johnson and Hart preview the show — in a very uncensored question and answer session — in the video below.

Big winners on the night included Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which took home the Movie of the Year prize, beating out Avengers: Age Of Ultron, the latest Rocky flick Creed, the dinosaur reboot Jurassic World, Marvel Comics R-Rated Deadpool and the hip-hop biopic Straight Outta Compton.

But Compton, the story of groundbreaking rap group N.W.A. who shot to national notoriety in the 1980s with their hard-edged raps depicting violent Los Angeles street life in graphic terms, still walked away with a trophy for best True Story.

Deadpool, the Marvel blockbuster about a superhero assassin, also did not leave empty handed either. Star Ryan Reynols took home the Best Comedic Performance trophy, as the action movie was also honored for “Best Fight.”

Watch the live stream of the pre-taped 2016 MTV Movie Awards in the video below. The show, and stream, starts at 7 p.m. Eastern Time, 4 p.m. Pacific, on Sunday, April 10, with a pre-show red carpet interview segment, followed 30 minutes later by the MTV Movie Awards “ceremony” itself.

Fans who watch the live stream of the 2016 MTV Movie Awards will have the privilege of watching Zac Efron and Seth Rogen, presenting the award to Ryan Reynolds, join a whole troupe of dancers dressed as the superhero Deadpool as they dance to the tune of Salt N Pepa’s hit “Shoop.”

In his acceptance speech Reynolds told the audience that it took him a decade of pushing to get the Deadpool film made and shooting the R-rated actioner wasn’t all “unicorns and cocaine.”

The film was clearly worth the hassle, however, going on to gross a worldwide total of more than $750 million so far, on a production budget of just under $60 million.

“I thank you the fans for getting this movie made,” Reynolds said, in a moment of sincerity. “You pushed it over the top.”

Star Wars: The Force Awakens was the dominant “force” of the night, however, collecting 11 nominations as Daisy Ridley collected an award for Best Breakthrough Performance.

“It’s especially amazing to be part of a film that represents all genders — two genders — and races and ages in such a positive and aspirational way,” Ridley said, accepting her honor.

The theme of diversity and gender empowerment extended into the Best Female Performance category as well, where Charlize Theron collected the prize for her turn as Imperator Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road.

She dedicated her victory to “all the Furiosas,” describing the high-octane, futuristic action epic as “in part a story of the power of women and the power to create our own destinies.”

Concussion star Will Smith, who also stars in the upcoming DC Comics superhero movie Suicide Squad, was given a “Generation Award,” which he described as “the old ass dude award.” Smith is 47 years old.
