Chris Brown Opens Up About His Reputation As A Rebel And Reveals What Daughter Royalty Has Taught Him

Chris Brown isn’t shy when it comes to speaking his mind on social media, so when the “Back To Sleep” singer sat down with Urban Ink to discuss his reputation as a rebel in the music industry, Brown admits that he’s much more interested in being an “inspiration” than a role model.

During his recent interview with Urban Ink for Inked Magazine, Chris Brown gets candid about his creative process, which includes everything from tattoos to his new clothing line, in addition to weighing in with his thoughts on his rebellious reputation and fatherhood status.

Speaking on his busy schedule, which includes touring for his recently released Royalty album, launching a new clothing line, Black Pyramid, and working on his mysterious upcoming documentary, Welcome to My Life, Brown credits his fearlessness and creativity with helping to keep him driven in the highly competitive music and fashion industries.

When asked about how his music has evolved throughout his career, Chris Brown explains that “it’s not arrogance, its fearlessness” that pushes him to experiment with new sounds.

“People dog themselves before they give themselves an opportunity to fail. So I think they let other people’s insecurities bring their doubts down,” Chris Brown explains of his ability to evolve his music over time.

“I don’t let that stop anything I’m doing,” Brown continues, “It’s never worked out for me in the past, so I think that listening to myself and focusing on what I needed to do puts me in that category. So if I wanted to rap or if I wanted to yodel, I think I would have just done it anyway with the confidence of saying, ‘I’m gonna do it.'”

Speaking on his collection of tattoos, which has been growing since he was just 13 years old, Chris Brown reveals that he’s all about “just having fun” when it comes to deciding on new ink.

“Usually, it just comes from us partying or being in some exciting environment. Mostly it’s just having fun. For me, I don’t try to focus too much on particulars when getting a tattoo,” Brown explains, noting that his first tattoo, which features a portrait of Jesus with musical notes, signifies “that God gave me the gift to sing.”

Chris Brown also weighs in on his reputation as a rebel in the industry, telling the mag that’d he much rather serve as an inspiration than as a role model to his fans.

“I would just say that I would rather be an inspiration and not a role model. Make your own decisions. You don’t have to rebel just to rebel. You don’t have to accept just to accept.”

While Chris Brown continues to face scrutiny over his frequent social media spats, most recently involving the likes of ex-girlfriend Karrueche Tran, former label mate Kevin McCall, and “Player” collaborator Tinashe, Brown admits that his daughter, Royalty, has taught him the meaning of responsibility and love.

“When I look at her, I see myself,” Chris Brown admits while gushing over his 1-year-old daughter, Royalty, “I see a better version of myself. I see her future. There’s no need to go backwards. At the end of the day, you learn that life is all about choices. Life is about responsibility and, actually, life is about love. Seeing my daughter embodies everything that I need to feel a sense of fulfillment and believe in myself. Being able to have her in my life, it’s just been amazing.”

The news comes just one week after Chris Brown seemingly acknowledged the recent backlash surrounding his social media spat with Zendaya, Tinashe, and Fifth Harmony during his acceptance speech for R&B Artist of the Year during the iHeartRadio Music Awards last Sunday, Rap-Up reports.

“As y’all can see, I tend to not have a filter sometimes and I go off on a lot of people,” Chris Brown explained during his acceptance speech, “but the music stays the same: positivity.”
