‘Sleepy Hollow’ Season 3 Finale Disappoints Fans, Leaves Season 4 Lacking Appeal

Sleepy Hollow caused quite the stir when the season 3 finale aired last night. The show has been hanging on by a thread since season 2 ended, and it looks like fans may finally have had enough with the direction the writers have decided to take. When Sleepy Hollow initially premiered, the ratings were huge. A fan base began growing, and it was all people were talking about. At some point during season 2, it lost momentum, and it was dubbed as likely to be canceled. Fox decided to give the show one more shot with season 3 and despite ratings being less-than-stellar, it was picked up for a fourth season.

Spoilers for Sleepy Hollow had been out for weeks prior to last night’s airing. While everyone knew a major character would be killed, the notion of what happened is not sitting well with fans. According to Us Weekly, Sleepy Hollow killed off Nicole Beharie’s character, Abbie Mills. This leaves plenty of questions for fans. How will there even be a season 4 without the two main characters? Abbie Mills and Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison) have been staples on the show since the beginning, and now they are no longer partners. While what Mills did was admirable, it was definitely not what Sleepy Hollow fans expected or wanted.

There is some fan concern that Sleepy Hollow killed off Nicole Beharie in order to bring in someone knew. The season 3 finale felt forced, and social media has been buzzing about it since it aired last night. It was clear that something big was coming for Sleepy Hollow, but not many believed the writers would actually separate Mills and Crane. They have this chemistry that will not be able to be replicated, even with someone new coming in for season 4. Fans are having a hard time accepting that Abbie sacrificed herself for Ichabod to go on and do his work, but this may just be a bump in the road for the partners.

When the spoilers were released for Sleepy Hollow foreshadowing a major character death, fans were up in arms. Abbie Mills and Ichabod Crane have always held the showdown, supported by several minor characters. Season 1 gave promise for Sleepy Hollow fans to have a show that would be surprising and fun, but it looks like that has since faded away. According to Entertainment Weekly, Sleepy Hollow showrunner Clifton Campbell talked about why Mills had to be the one to die. He felt that she served her purpose as a witness, and now it is time to expand the show. Mills’ final act was to honor Crane. Sleepy Hollow will not be the same without her, and fans are absolutely sure of this.

Fox has decided to give Sleepy Hollow a season 4. This came as a shock to fans who have watched since the beginning. It was struggling to keep viewers after season 2, but now with Abbie Mills gone, many feel like watching is pointless. Social media has decided to blow up over the loss of Nicole Beharie, though she hasn’t said much about the decision to kill her off Sleepy Hollow. There is some hope that the writers may bring her back in visions or dreams, though that has only been speculation.

The outcry of Sleepy Hollow fans may move the writers to make changes, but that is an unlikely scenario. With so much time invested into Sleepy Hollow, the fans and writers should be listening to one another. Without a steady story line and something for fans to hold onto, Sleepy Hollow will likely be canceled before a season 5 can even be presented.
