New Poll Reveals Donald Trump Now Viewed As ‘Unfavorable’ By An Overwhelming Majority Of Voters

The Washington Post called the last week Donald Trump‘s “terrible, horrible, no good, very bad week,” and with good reason. After a series of missteps, the billionaire candidate found himself on the wrong side of voters and special interests alike on a number of topics, including national security and abortion. To make matters worse, his campaign director Corey Lewandowski was charged with battery over a dust-up with reporter Michelle Fields.

But the start of a new week did not necessarily bring better news for Donald Trump after he took a virtual drubbing in Wisconsin’s hotly contested primary election on Tuesday, coming in second against his chief rival Ted Cruz. While his disappointing finish was not necessarily unexpected, the defeat nevertheless appears consistent with an emerging trend of disenchantment with the controversial candidate’s rhetoric and bombast. Indeed, a new Associated Press-GfK poll shows that an overwhelming majority of Americans hold unfavorable opinions of Trump and the results are not confined to one specific demographic group or geographical region.

As noted by The New York Post, seven out of ten people now view Trump in a negative light. That figure includes almost half of voters who identify themselves as Republicans.

“It’s an opinion shared by majorities of men and women; young and old; conservatives, moderates and liberals; and whites, Hispanics and blacks — a devastatingly broad indictment of the billionaire businessman.”

It is worth noting that the unfavorable opinions of voters might not necessarily indicate the ultimate demise of Donald Trump’s political aspirations. However, his national polling numbers have been on the decline over the course of recent weeks, indicating that he would face a tight race – or even go down in defeat – if he goes head-to-head with Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders in November.

“Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton leads Trump by double digits in at least six national polls in March, even as her own favorability ratings appear weak,” said a report by NBC News which cited polling data from Real Clear Politics. It was further noted that a projection by a nonpartisan election forecaster currently indicates that Democrats would easily win 347 electoral votes in a contest against Trump, although only 240 are needed to win.

Donald Trump’s recurring foil Megyn Kelly weighed in on the Trump sensation at the 7th Annual Women In The World Summit, telling Katie Couric that she believes the mainstream media bears a good deal of responsibility for the candidate’s initial spike in popularity. In comments transcribed by Fortune Magazine, Kelly noted that the real estate mogul has garnered more coverage than any other presidential candidate, primarily due to the favorable ratings he draws.

Donald Trump still has the potential for some big victories in the near future, as he is expected to fare well in the New York primary election later this month. But many pundits now see a contested Republican National Convention as an inevitability with the possibility that the contentious affair could develop into a national embarrassment. According to CBS News, Donald Trump has seen fit to restructure his campaign staff in preparation for such a showdown, intent that he will leave the event as the GOP nominee.
