NFL Rumors: Denver Broncos Signing Johnny Manziel

NFL rumors are swirling around Johnny Manziel. The former Texas A&M star has a knack for generating headlines, but this time, it is actually about football. According to ESPN, the Denver Broncos met with the troubled quarterback to see if he would be interested in signing with them. Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak reportedly thinks that Manziel might be a fit for his run-oriented offense, so he kicked the tires to see how things are coming along for Johnny.

While some may dismiss the meeting as just doing due diligence, the Denver Broncos may actually have interest in signing Johnny Manziel. Otherwise, they wouldn’t the waste time and resources of arranging a meeting, especially with the NFL Draft coming around the corner. The coaching staff should be focused on finding potential contributors from the college ranks. Meeting with Manziel means that the Broncos believe that he might be able to contribute for them next season.

Many will view this discussion with Johnny Manziel as a sign that the Denver Broncos are desperate to resolve their issues at the quarterback position. Peyton Manning retired from the NFL, and he might be reluctant to change his mind. Brock Osweiler didn’t believe that the Broncos had his back, so he is now with the Houston Texans. Mark Sanchez was traded from the Philadelphia Eagles, but he seems more suited to be a backup quarterback.

Signing Johnny Manziel doesn’t mean that the Denver Broncos are going to hand him the starting quarterback spot on a silver platter. Not only does he have to earn the job, but he also needs to earn the respect of his new teammates, many of whom might not believe that the NFL is his passion. Broncos general manager John Elway is going to continue to add more depth to the position, so it will definitely be a competition when training camp gets to the important part.

One of the reasons why Gary Kubiak is intrigued with Johnny Manziel is because of his natural talents and the fact that the Denver Broncos offensive scheme asks for less from the quarterback position than other teams in the NFL. Kubiak prefers a power running game. He only likes to throw when necessary. Manziel will be asked to play under center, protect the ball, feed the running back and throw short precise routes.

Of course, before any of this can happen, Johnny Manziel needs to clear himself of his legal issues. The justice system is still trying to figure out whether or not to charge the 23-year-old for an incident where he was accused of assault his ex girlfriend. Manziel could be facing a maximum punishment of a year in jail, in which case, the NFL would be the last thing on his mind.

For obvious reasons, there are many people who are doubting that Johnny Manziel can ever get his life in order and return to the NFL. Right now, the Texas native is living in Los Angeles. That’s not exactly a location that is conducive for someone that is trying to avoid the nightlife. There are already reports of Manziel being spotted partying in both California and Las Vegas. The City of Sin is probably the worst place on the planet for Johnny to be if he wants back in the good graces of the National Football League.

Sometimes, desperation can bring two sides together. The Denver Broncos badly need a quarterback, so that they don’t waste the tremendous potential of their dominant defense. Another Super Bowl victory is possible if they can find a solid quarterback. Concurrently, Johnny Manziel is running out of options in the NFL.
