San Diego, CA (AHN) – A California man was arrested this week on federal murder charges after being accused of killing his wife aboard a cruise from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation said Robert McGill, 55, killed his wife Shirley McGill, also 55, in their Carnival Cruise Lines cabin. The FBI said in a press release that the ship’s security responded to their cabin after receiving a domestic disturbance report. When they arrived, they found Shirley McGill dead.

The McGills were traveling on the Carnival Cruise ship Elation, which carries 2,052 people, and on its third day iinto its five-day journey.

McGill however was arrested on the federal charge of murder within the special maritime and territorial jurisdiction of the United States.

A local NBC News affiliate reported that Shirley McGill was killed from blunt force injuries and strangulation. The news came as a shock to those who knew the McGills. They were former high school sweethearts who were reunited and married five years ago, the NBC affiliate reported.
