McKayla Maroney Is Not Impressed With Meme Inspired By Her

McKayla Maroney is not impressed with meme inspired by her

McKayla Maroney is not impressed with the meme generated by her seemingly sour face at only winning a silver medal in the vault competition at the 2012 London Olympics. At least, not too impressed.

Maroney, who also won a gold medal for the US team’s performance, was caught with a very unimpressed look as she stood on the podium to accept her silver medal. The picture quickly spread across the internet with user-generated captions following, making McKayla Maroney the most meme’d athlete at the Olympics.

Her pout on the podium inspired the viral Tumblr McKayla Is Not Impressed. Created by 28-year-old New Yorker Gavin Alaoen, the page was registered Tuesday night with three Photoshopped images of McKayla Maroney looking unimpressed. The pouting 16-year-old Maroney has since been Photoshopped everywhere from double rainbows to the surface of Mars.

The Tumblr itself has blown up, receiving 1,200 followers just a few hours after being formed.

“It’s just a two-or-three-week kind of thing,” Alaoen told The Wall Street Journal. “It’s a hot topic right now. And then it’s onto the next one.”

Some people online have claimed there is truth behind the meme, saying that McKayla Maroney is a “mean girl,” Salon reported. Her chilly demeanor and refusal to even pretend to be happy have struck many people the wrong way, as did what seemed like a snub of bronze medal winner Maria Paseka while they were on the podium.

McKayla Maroney even commented on the meme, responding either in good humor or in the true spirit of her “not impressed” persona, depending on how you interpret her tweet: “this tumblr is kinda funny, made me laugh.”

Though the insults of her personality grew online as more pictures poured in of McKayla Maroney looking angry, Salon writer Mary Elizabeth Williams points out that these are many of the same petty internet commenters who ragged on Gabby Douglas’ hair.

I found the following on another website:
Maroney's performance came while she struggled with a broken toe. In May, Maroney broke it. In June, she did it again. In July, about a week before the Olympics started, she increased the break after dismounting from the balance beam.
Maroney suffered a mild concussion and nasal fracture after hitting her head during training on the floor routine at the U.S. gymnastics championships. Less than a month after the injury she went to U.S. trials and qualified for the Olympic team.

Use the Russian girl who cried every 5 minutes instead. She's definitely "high maintenance", not Maroney.

I saw her have a couple black eyes it appeared. I wondered if it was black eyes or whether her makeup was falling which can do but not usually the stuff gymnasts wear. Now I'm leaning towards black eyes again.

Isn't it fun to make fun of people in our society. What the heck. Let's push her into a nervous breakdown. All you that mock this girl is ridiculous. You have no idea what it is to go for a dream that costs your family ridiculous amounts of money, long hours in the gym, no junk food, total discipline. She was disappointed in her self because she did not do her best. That's it, but let's make it into a Saturday Night skit.

Yes that was horrible to have a mistake like that when she's clearly the best. People would understand if they paid the price like she did.

I thought she looked like a lil' prima donna even before making this face. Annoying……

I wouldn't think she was snotty just for being upset. She is obviously not happy with her performance and I don't blame her. No one could touch her until she landed on her butt, which still didn't set her back by much, she got silver. Please don't judge her until you've gone through getting what you've worked for most of your life stripped from you over a mistake you've never made before. I would have been upset too.

What a nice way to represent you Country while on the Platform! ( Lucky I wasn't your coach ) And don't give me any of that S*** either about paying the price and to sacrifice I'm a Retired U.S. Army Infantryman with 23 years and have paid enough so you can enjoy your sport. Be lucky you got a silver medal or nothing at all.

To amber spurlin. Think of all the things she got to experience while in london and she acts like that for winning a silver medal and you wana talk about judging her? I say again a snotty little brat. Way to represent american youth

Come on really. SHE WON THE SILVER. SECOND BEST IN THE WORLD. She acts like that in front of the whole world. Mabey she did sacrifice alot to get there, including sportsmanship. Snotty little brat

What I'm saying is she wasn't acting like that because she won a Silver. She was upset with herself for not doing her best. She said so herself in an interview. Every gymnest who made a mistake acted that way when they were done.

Thanks for your post. I am so sick of the nasty comments. She was upset, disappointed in herself, and unlike some was not able to flash the fake smile when she knew she could have done better. She was mad at herself for making the sort of mistake she never makes. She is to be commended for the amazing vaults she performed during the qualify round, the team final and her firstvault in the individual competition which was the best (by far) of the night. Few of us know what's it is like to dedicate one's self like these athletes do. Leave the poor girl alone!

  14. Cindy Stone Murphy

Exactly. She got the silver in the all-around and waved off her coach and teammates and cried and looked angry. She never once smiled.

  15. Cindy Stone Murphy

Amber Spurlin Lindsey – You are so right. Very few people understand what these athletes go through. She was probably thinking about how annoyed she was at herself for making a mistke she never makes.

You might want to review some of the tapes of her during the competition. There are several times where she is shown supporting her teammates, looking them in the eye and saying things like, "You can do this." She is the team captain and was chosen because of the way she is known to support her teammates.

The fact that we are just supposed to lose and just smile about it is what is wrong with the USA now. I have no problem with her being pissed.
