Most American were shocked when Today Show host Ann Curry was gently fired from the show back in July. We were left trying to figure out what Ann had done to deserve being kicked off the air. Well, it seems as if her clothes and shoes may have played a role, according to an interview with Curry in the August issue of Ladies’ Home Journal.
Ann claimed in the interview,
“One day I wore a multicolored dress and someone asked if I was trying to be Toucan Sam. But I chose it because I thought, This will perk up America. I’m encouraged by my bosses to wear these ridiculously high-heeled shoes because women say, ‘I love your shoes!’ So if it makes women happy, I’ll wear them. But I’m still going to be me… I’ve tried to wear clogs and flats on TV and it hasn’t gone well with my bosses.”
Curry also addressed the issue of women who go grey saying she has no intention of ever dying her hair.
Curry said:
“I’ve decided not to buy into the idea that I want to stop aging. My wrinkles connect me to my family, to my ancestors and to my future. This is how my father looked when he was my age. I’ve got cellulite because it runs in my family. I’ve got gray hair because I won’t dye it.”
It is an interesting proposition that NBC may have disliked Ann’s choices of dress and foot covering, but there are very few websites which are buying into that theory.
While NBC won't come out and say so, just as other employers won't admit, they don't want to acknowledge that aging can be beautiful. Most folks don't want to recognize that there is age discrimination out there but it is alive and well and being used under the guise of phrases like "you're overqualified for this position" or "people identify with someone right out of college". The list of excuses goes on and on. This happened to me when I turned 55. I'm still working though (aged 64 now) and plan to keep doing so – with my gray hair and my flat shoes!
I think Ann has learned that the liberal agenda will turn on a dime and consume you…..no core values whatever.

I have watched The Today show for ever. I have quit watching it regular because they fired Ann Curry. They gave Meredith Vieira 2 hour tribute and Ann 10 Min. What a waste!

Ann, you made my day each morning with your bright smile. I loved your wit and your news was told in such a manner that showed you really cared about what was happening in our world. You never looked like you were reading just words. I really miss you and hope you soon show up on another show. I will surely make that the one to watch….

I now watch ABC and CBS and I really like Dianne Sawyer – no more NBC news for me. Good luck to Ann Curry I always enjoyed seeing and hearing her. The execs at NBC are the ones that need to go!
I was shocked & sad to hear that she was let go! She did her job well, and is just as good as the others. I thought for sure she would replace Katie, and Meredith did not even last. Finally Ann got the spot she well deserved. I do miss Ann on the Today's show.

I really object to the title of this story. It was obviously written to sensationalize the interview. Although I have not had access to the full interview, it sounds like Ann was talking about the many, many tiny things that may have contributed to her firing. I deeply doubt that she was claiming that this was the specific reason she was let go.
On a better note, I just saw her on the Today show doing a feature on Olympic photography. It was a good piece, although a bit awkward, and I would have liked a longer segment. And it was great to see Ann once again doing what she's great at.
Good for Ann for gradually getting back into the game. In the long run I hope she will be able to do the insightful, content-rich stories she excels at. Ann has always brought to our attention stories from around the world that we may have overlooked, expressing the plight of people not in the spotlight and doing so with grace and intelligence.
I loved Ann on the show. I stopped watching when she left. I know it is about ratings and profits so how could one person be blamed?

I watched The Today Show, faithfully, every morning since the 60's. I QUIT WATCHING just as soon as they kicked Ann Curry to the curb. I liked her. I liked her style. She had class, which the show sorely lacks with her absence. I will never watch The Today Show again. Good Morning America for me from now on! Unless, of course, NBC wants to admit they've made a monumental mistake, acknowledge that they've lost a large part of their fanbase and hire Ann back. Untill then it's GMA all the way for me.

My hope for Ann Curry is that she lands a great job far away from NBC and, in the process, makes their execs look like the sinking "ship of fools" they are. What this is really about is discrimination against women and women who are aging and comfortable with aging… does that sound like liberal philosophy to you? Generally, the bosses of most big organizations in this country are conservatives who look out for themselves and their buds, while the employees are more liberal, at least within the gross generalization of orgs you include as "liberal"… NBC has discriminated against women anchors for years, case in point, the fab Jane Pauley, but there are others as well. Matt Lauer is at best a balding, aging, no-longer-attractive anchor, and he's doing just fine at NBC. Why wasn't Matt held accountable for the ratings drop? What about the show's format — it's gone from being a morning news and entertainment show to being a very long show with much waste-of-time, who-cares nonsense and a pathetic hour of boring gossip with Kathy & Hoda. Kathie Lee is shallow as they come to begin with… Hoda was an excellent news person till NBC wrecked her image… Savannah Guthrie is cute and competent and youthful and is probably getting a lot of the blame unfairly for Ann's firing (she's not a decision-maker is she?) — hope she leaves before NBC has the chance to sink her boat! The first time I saw Ann on the Today Show, I thought she was stunning and very capable and by far the most effective woman anchor they've ever had — still think so! She is truly lovely, and probably a liberal because she's not preoccupied with money and position, but with caring about people.
