Valve’s Steam digital distribution platform is host to thousands upon thousands of PC and Mac titles from a variety of developers, and it looks like soon the service will also be offering a selection of software titles as well.

On Wednesday, Valve announced that starting September 5, a handful of software titles will be available on Steam. The company didn’t say exactly what software will be available, nor how many. Valve would only say that the products range from creativity to productivity.

“The 40 million gamers frequenting Steam are interested in more than playing games,” said Mark Richardson at Valve. “They have told us they would like to have more of their software on Steam, so this expansion is in response to those customer requests.”

Following the initial batch of software, Valve says that it will gradually add more and more software to their leading digital distribution service. A good number of the initial batch of software will also come with Steamworks features such as cloud saving, and automatic updating.

Over the past several months, Valve has been making a push towards expanding the Steam service and the content available on it. First, we received the Source Filmmaker, the very tools that the company uses to make its internal videos, and then we heard that the company is looking into building a version of Steam for Linux.

“The goal of the Steam client project is a fully-featured Steam client running on Ubuntu 12.04,” Valve said in a blog post last month.

“Since the Steam client isn’t much without a game, we’re also porting L4D2 to Ubuntu. This tests the game-related features of the Steam client, in addition to L4D2 gameplay on Ubuntu. Over the last few months, excellent progress has been made on several fronts and it now runs natively on Ubuntu 12.04.”
