‘Kingdom Hearts Unchained ?’ Mobile App Launch Set For April, Connection To ‘HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue’ Revealed

The Kingdom Hearts Unchained ? mobile game is scheduled to launch on April 7, when players in North America can begin downloading the app to Android and iOS devices.

The app has both competitive and collaborative features, including a leaderboard/ranking system. Special events to collect medals, avatar costumes, and other in-app goodies are going to be announced via @kh_ux_na, the new, official Twitter page for the North American version of the game. Kingdom Hearts director Tetsuya Nomura has also revealed a possible connection between mobile game Unchained ? and the upcoming Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue on PlayStation 4.

Kingdom Hearts Unchained ? (pronounced “Unchained Key”) was announced at E3 last year, and released in Japan in September, 2015. Then, at the Jump Fest 2015 event, Square Enix announced Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, which includes an HD remastered version of Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance. It will be the first time Sora and the gang will be playable on the PlayStation 4 console prior to the highly anticipated launch of Kingdom Hearts III.

Also included in the Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue collection is a fully playable Birth By Sleep chapter, entitled “A Fragmentary Passage.” This brand-new chapter is played from the perspective of Aqua, and it takes place after the ending of Birth By Sleep. An hour long movie, called Kingdom Hearts ? Back Cover, is also part of the HD collection. In a recent interview featured on the official Square Enix blog, Nomura describes the connection between the Unchained ? and all the titles included in the Final Chapter Prologue.

“All three titles within Kingdom Hearts II.8 has a link to Kingdom HeartsUnchained ? in some way. You can see it most prominently shown in Kingdom Hearts ? Back Cover – a brand-new, approximately one-hour long cinematic piece, which is depicted from the perspective the Foretellers, who gather the Keyblade Wielders. On the flip side, Kingdom Hearts Unchained ? is seen from the player’s perspective. By watching Kingdom Hearts ? Back Cover, the player will be able to get a glimpse of what kind of motive these supposed leaders are operating under behind the scenes.”

Nomura then hints at how the Dream Eaters are far more important to the series than even dedicated fans may have realized.

“And in Kingdom HeartsDream Drop Distance HD, which is the HD remastered version of the Nintendo 3DS game Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, you may noticed the Dream Eaters were a sort of foreshadowing. And the title that would act as a bridge between these two titles would be the latest installment in the series, Kingdom Hearts0.2 Birth By Sleep, which is developed utilizing the technology behind Kingdom HeartsIII. It is a sequel to Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep, and a short episode that follows immediately after the events of Kingdom HeartsDream Drop Distance HD, but it’s a title in which players can get an early feel for Kingdom Hearts III.”

The interview with Nomura also reveals that aside from Daybreak Town, there will be no other unique or new worlds in the game at launch. However, he does add that future updates may allow for this to happen.

Players in North America will finally get to experience the mobile novelty and unique story of Unchained ? when it debuts this month. An official release date for the Final Chapter Prologue has not yet been announced, but it is expected to drop before the end of the year.
