‘Outlander’ Stars Caitriona Balfe And Sam Heughan Reveal They ‘Fought For’ One Particular Season 2 Sex Scene

The first season of Outlander featured plenty of romantic moments between Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe). However, with the second season moving to Paris, France, and Claire going through her first pregnancy, the amount of sex scenes is going to decline. Fortunately for fans, there will be some sex scenes in the new season, though Heughan and Balfe had to fight hard for them.

In an interview with TV Line, Balfe was asked about how her character’s love life will change now that she is expecting a child. In reply, Balfe explained how pregnancy and sex are typically approached with caution on television, though Outlander did allow for at least one scene with her baby bump.

“It’s funny, I think sometimes in television, people can be scared of, ‘Oh, we can’t have pregnant people having sex,’… Sam and I really fought for this love scene that included the bump.”

Balfe went on to explain how just because Claire is pregnant doesn’t mean she feels any less sexy than in the first season. Instead, Balfe promised fans that Claire feels the exact opposite as she prepares to have her first child.

“A lot of pregnant women that I’ve spoken to are very sexy, very sexual and womanly when they’re pregnant, and men find them attractive,” Balfe stated. “It should be a time to be celebrated. So we hope we did that justice, as well.”

The new season of Outlander will see the time traveling couple heading to Paris, France in order to change history. Their main mission this time around is to prevent the Battle of Culloden and the Jacobite Rebellion from happening in order to preserve Scottish heritage and culture.

In order to accomplish their mission, Claire and Jamie will mingle with the upper class of Parisian society. In so doing, the series will introduce a number of exciting new characters as well as a major switch in wardrobe. While the first season of Outlander was marked by its heavy use of tartans, the new season will feature plenty of fine silks and dresses, though Jamie’s kilt will make a reappearance at some point.

In addition to the new setting, Jamie and Claire are still dealing with everything that happened at the end of the first season. Of course, this includes Claire’s recently announced pregnancy and also Jamie’s traumatic experience at the hands of Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies). With so many things happening in the new season, Jamie and Claire’s relationship is going to be put to the ultimate test.

Meanwhile, as fans wait eagerly for the release of Season 2, Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Heughan recently made an appearance on The Late Late Show With James Corden. As per usual, Corden teamed Heughan up with an interesting guest in Rita Wilson.

While sitting next to Heughan, Wilson told Corden that all of her friends were envious that she was interviewing with the star of Outlander. “When I told the girls we were going to be on the couch together, they were very excited,” she stated. “We’ll have to get a selfie or something.”

For his part, Heughan praised Outlander’s dedicated fan-base as partly responsible for the show’s success. In fact, Heughan revealed that some fans even show up on set and gift the cast and crew with an assortment of baked goods.

“We have these amazingly dedicated fans,” Heughan stated in the interview. “We’re shooting in Scotland, in the Highlands or next to a mountain, and we have fans that turn up and bring baked goods. A lot of cookies, muffins. I’m surprised they’re not here today.”

The interview was one of many Heughan has done in recent weeks as the series gears up for its highly anticipated premiere.

The second season of Outlander is set to return on Starz on April 9.
