F-15E Crashes In Afghanistan, 2 Die

Kabul, Afghanistan (AHN) – A US F-15E jet crashed in eastern region of Afghanistan on Saturday, killing two crewmembers aboard the plane, the US military said in a statement.
The F-15E crashed at approximately 3:15 A.M. Kabul time while it was conducting coalition operations.
The military officials said that the crash of the fighter plane was caused by some mechanical problems, ruling out the possibility of hostile fire at the jet.
The incident occurred after a U.S. helicopter was shot down by Taliban insurgents in the restive southern province of Helmand on Tuesday. At least five people were killed in the attack.
The F-15E Strike Eagle is a dual-role fighter designed to perform air-to-air and air-to-ground missions, according to the U.S. military website.
An array of avionics and electronics systems gives the F-15E the capability to fight at low altitude, day or night, and in all weather, it added.
The icasualties.org site showed that as many as 742 U.S. troops have been killed in Afghanistan since 2001 invasion, including 112 personnel in 2009.
There are around 38,000 American troops in the country serving alongside another 32,000 NATO-led and coalition troops. Early this year, U.S. President Barack Obama announced to increase the presence of U.S. troops by 21,000 in Afghanistan by the end of 2009.
The current number of troops in the region is the highest figure since the invasion of Afghanistan to remove the Taliban from power started in 2001.
