Facebook Building Jabber-Based Chat

You’ll soon be able to chat with your Facebook friends without ever logging in to the site.

Facebook has just announced plans to develop a new Jabber/XMPP interface for its popular chat program. The interface will let users see who’s online, talk to them, and even alter their own status from a remote Jabber-based application. The Inside Facebook blog broke word of the news prior to its official announcement on the Facebook Developers’ Blog.

Engineers haven’t given any timeline for when the new chat could launch. They do say, though, that they’re open to feedback from third-party developers interested in building tools around the function.
