NYPD Will Use Subpoena To Force Twitter To Reveal Who Tweeted ‘People Gonna Die Like Aurora’

The NYPD will serve a subpoena on Twitter today to find out which user tweeted “people are gonna die like Aurora” at a Broadway theater. The Twitter social networking website refused to consent to an emergency request by the New York Police Department to turn over the poster’s name, the Daily Mail reports.

The Twitter user also noted a massacre similar to the Aurora movie theater shooting will take place at the Longacre Theatre on Broadway. Armed NYPD officers went to the theater last evening, on the opening night of Mike Tyson’s Undisputed Truth performance, the New York Post notes.

NYPD spokesman Paul Browne told The Post officers would continue to “cover the theater” until the Twitter user is found. Browne also noted the NYPD needs a name and needs it fast to prevent a potential tragedy, but Twitter refused to help, and the law enforcement agency investigation was delayed while applying for a subpoena.

“This shit ain’t no joke yo- I’m serious, people are gonna die like Aurora. Gosh I’m still making this hit list damn I wanna kill a lot of people,” the Twitter posts by the yet unnamed individual read.

Once NYPD detectives were informed about the Aurora referencing Twitter post, the law enforcement agency immediately contacted Twitter to discover the identity of the social networking site user. Twitter refused to reveal the user’s name when responding via email the following day.

“We appreciate the timeliness and sensitivity of this matter and have reviewed the reported Twitter account. While we do invoke emergency-disclosure procedures when it appears that a threat is present, specific and immediate, this does not appear to fall under those strict parameters as per our policies,” states a Twitter email response to the NYPD

A Twitter poster responded to the threats of a second Aurora style shooting spree, asking why the user had not yet gone trough with his threats. The Twitter user the NYPD is seeking to identify responded that he is in Florida at the moment but reiterated his promised of a Broadway shooting massacre as soon as he gets back and finishes his “hit list.”
