Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow Update For Blackberry Priv Arriving Soon? [VIDEO]

Nothing official has been announced yet, but recent speculations suggest a possibility that the release of Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update for the Blackberry Priv is already on the horizon. Mobipicker cited a video showing a Blackberry Priv running on the latest version of Android Marshmallow.

The last news for the first Blackberry Android phone emerged back in January, noting that the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update would not arrive anytime soon. According to Mobipicker, the reports then noted that the release details for Blackberry Priv’s Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update will be unleashed during the first quarter of the year.

Today is the last day for Q1 2016, and not much has been officially revealed by Blackberry about the phone’s firmware update. Right now, what can only be used as a guarantee that the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update is arriving for the Blackberry Priv is the video showing a unit running the latest firmware. Crackberry noted that based on the video, it seems like the smartphone manufacturer “didn’t change much by way of looks on the Priv” running on Android Marshmallow.

It can’t be confirmed if the Blackberry phone that was used in the video is a test unit, but folks from Mobipicker said that it made them wonder if the rollout of Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update for Priv has begun already, although unintentionally.

Exact details regarding the changes coming for Blackberry Priv when Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update arrives are still undisclosed, but most definitely, it will bring in the new major features of the mobile software. For instance, users will be able to experience “Now on Tap,” the system’s smarter and faster virtual assistance service. Android’s official page’s description for one of the highlights of Marshmallow update read as follows.

“Now on Tap anticipates what you need in the moment. With a simple tap, you can get cards with useful information and apps that feed your need to know.”

Android Marshmallow OS also promises a smarter and improved battery performance, with new features like Doze and App Standby. The former automatically sets the smartphone into a sleep state when it is not being used, while the latter is designed to avoid unused apps from draining your juice.

Blackberry Priv was released in November last year. Know Your Mobile, in its review, described the Android handset equipped with a QWERTY keyboard as “one of 2015’s most exciting releases.” The review also specified that the smartphone’s selling points include its excellent display, awesome specs, and decent camera. With Android apps now usable for the smartphone, the review also noted that not having app gap anymore is a plus point for the smartphone.

On the other hand, two of the phone’s disadvantages, according to the review, are the issues with its battery performance and its keyboard being not as good as that of the Blackberry Passport.

As for the phone’s official specs, the smartphone comes with 5.4-inch display with AMOLED touchscreen. It has a curved edge screen protected by Corning Gorilla Glass, according to GSMArena. The screen resolution is 1440 x 2560 pixels, with a 540 ppi pixel density.

The smartphone came pre-installed with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. Under the hood, its hardware specs include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 SoC, a dual-core 1.8 GHz Cortex-A57 and quad-core 1.44 GHz Cortex A53 CPU paired with Adreno 418 GPU. Blackberry Priv’s default internal memory storage is 32 GB with 3GB of RAM. Memory expansion is possible up to 200 GB via a microSD slot.

When it comes to its shooter specs, Blackberry Priv users should be able to enjoy 18MP lens from its primary camera, which uses the Schneider-Kreuznach optics. The selfie shooter has a 2 MP lens sensor.
